Pete Klein Posted August 16, 2018 Report Posted August 16, 2018 HI -- I wold appreciate it greatly if someone who has the mentioned book would be so kind to let me know how many tsuba entries there are. I am trying to decide if it's worth picking up as a tosogu reference. Thanks so much! Pete Klein Quote
uwe Posted August 16, 2018 Report Posted August 16, 2018 Hi Pete, not that much I'm afraid. Let me check in detail. I'll come back to you at the weekend. Quote
Luc T Posted August 16, 2018 Report Posted August 16, 2018 Only a few Saotome if I remember well Quote
Pete Klein Posted August 17, 2018 Author Report Posted August 17, 2018 OK - thanks. Let me know if you find any different then. It's not worth the purchase at ~ $80 for what could most likely be scanned if necessary. Thanks much! Quote
Curran Posted August 17, 2018 Report Posted August 17, 2018 Only a few Saotome if I remember well I was following this, as I had the same question as Pete. In my case, I was looking specifically for Saotome tsuba with earlier style kozuka and kogai ana like the attached one. Please let me know if there is anything similar. Quote
Ed Posted August 17, 2018 Report Posted August 17, 2018 Yeah, I don't have the book anymore. I let it go as it only had a very few tsuba in it. If it had had many katchushi examples I would have held onto it. Quote
Guido Posted August 18, 2018 Report Posted August 18, 2018 I have the book - there are less than a dozen (small, b/w) pictures of tsuba in it. Quote
uwe Posted August 18, 2018 Report Posted August 18, 2018 Hi Pete, as said before, only a few b/w pics (...of bad quality) are shown in the book. In the text, however, you can find "all" the armorers who made tsuba as well. Some entries also mention the way how the smith usually signed his work. Quote
IanB Posted August 18, 2018 Report Posted August 18, 2018 By far the best source on the Saotome is Dr. Orikasa who did a considerable amount of work on their origins and subsequent work, but concentrating on their helmets rather than tsuba. He did produce an English version titled 'Studies on Arms and Armour' if you can find a copy. Ian Bottomley Quote
