Lawrencevanrijn Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 First of all Kudo's to Richard Turner. That magnificent article on fake katana's was such an eye-opener. Now, i know that fakes are abundant, and so far my (with limited knowledge) method was: 1. only look on .jp sites. 2. Treat anything under $3000 as a joke. I know, it isn't a perfect system, but it was, until i became a member here, all i had. Now the question i have, is that i am intersted in saving up for a decent set. Tanto, Wahizashi and Katana. Is this a weird idea? I have never seen a set. (or even for sale as single items, but matching). Cheers, Lawrence
Brian Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Lawrence, Tachi were usually paired with a tanto, or katana with wakizashi. I am sure there are matching sets of all 3 out there somewhere, but they would be unusual, and extremely rare/expensive. I haven't seen one myself. Brian
Guido Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 I haven't seen one myself.Neither have I, FWIW, but I don't think they were ever made. Matching Tachi and Tantô is rare enough, matching Katana and Wakizashi or Tantô are plentyful, but who would want to walk around with three blades?
Brian Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Yep..that's what I suspected. I would think that if it was done, then probably by a modern collector making up a (what would you call it anyways? :?) set for himself...or if there were any earlier, then probably by a wealthy merchant who didn't carry them, but just wanted to own them. That's a big if of course. Either way, I don't think it is too realistic, and the OP should be looking for a daisho to remain historically correct. Brian
Mark Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 A person i knew swore he had a dozen sets of 3 matching swords he called Trisho...... strangely enough when i visited his home and asked to see them they were all out at the cleaners so i did not get to see this impressive collection. true story.
Guido Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 (what would you call it anyways? :?)I think the word you're looking for is "novelty item" - like the set in the attachment from Gungfu Martial Arts (I'm not making the name up!) which can be your's for just $ 39.95!
Jean Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Guido wrote but who would want to walk around with three blades? Someone very scared or taking himself for a man-at-war
Stephen Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Tanto, Wahizashi and Katana. Is this a weird idea? Larry to answer your question No! not all of us can afford a a lot of swords and to have a good sword of each size is a good collection in my book. Take your time (years) and I think a good range would be daito Koto...shoto Shinto...Tanto Shinshinto. and all the above post is right, only fantasy stuff comes in sets of three.
Brian Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 only fantasy stuff comes in sets of three. I agree. Many of us have that same fantasy of a threesome. Brian
Jean Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Brian wrote "I agree. Many of us have that same fantasy of a threesome. " IMHO, a foursome is better. 2 daisho of course
Bungo Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 since the moderator himself is guilty of I might as well suggest a Roman orgy , best thing that ever came out of Rome besides the pasta ( which i heard they copied from the Chinese ) and Lena Lolobrigida ( spelling ? old timers will know who i am referring to ). milt
Brian Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Ok..I know I am guilty of starting it (Milt...puns and subtlety work wonders, you should try it! ) but let's try and steer this one back on track now. Not sure if any more can be said about dai-sho-sho though. Brian
Bungo Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Actually, the threesome may not be a impossibility , I am referring both the " social " ( :D ) AND the " martial " aspect. The samurai may have the " trisho " but didn't have to wear them all at one time......... just like he can have fun with the #1 and then command the maid to join in.......... or just the maid when the #1 is " indisposed " or vice versa. milt
Rich S Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Actually I did see a "trisho" (swords, not the other type - I can only dream :-) at the mall a while back. Of course they had plastic "gold" fittings and aluminum blades. :-) Keep looking they're out there :-) Rich S
Rickisan Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Keep in mind we have a new lady in the forum... We wouldnt want to set a bad example Rick
Lawrencevanrijn Posted May 23, 2008 Author Report Posted May 23, 2008 Well, I wouldn't consider walking with three blades, it is more the idea to have the two swords, and to have additional a tanto that is identical in looks to the other two, even though i probalby would only use the tanto separate from when i use the Katana and Wakazashi. And that doesn't happen that ofte anyways. Just the idea to have the three the same way. As for the actual swords, i was more yielding towards the idea of having new swords forged (and also a tanto) from a modern Japanese swordmaster, when i have enough Cash accumulated. Hence the thought arose. And bumping into this place seemd like the perfect place to post the question. Cheers, Lawrence
sencho Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 Well, ... even though i probalby would only use the tanto separate from when i use the Katana and Wakazashi. Lawrence, What do you mean by the word "use" Cheers
