Kotetsu1959 Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Here is an early “B” series Mantetsu. The sword also bears the stamp, and is in Kyu-gunto mounts. 1 Quote

Ray, That's not just an early B - it's the first B we have ever seen/recorded!!! Please post full nakago shots of both sides, I need the date. Oh, and a photo of the overall fittings, too, please! Is it per chance a Navy kyu? Quote
Kotetsu1959 Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Yes Bruce, It is that naval mounted sword, with a mon as well. The saya wrap is tattered, but the mounts are complete and of high quality. I tried to post some more pictures but will need to reduce the size. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 3 Author Report Posted February 3 Ok, great, Ray! I posted some photos from the auction here: Kyu Corner. They only posted a rubbing of the nakago, so real photos would be great when able. Some of us were following that auction, hoping the winner would bring it to the forum. Really appreciate you bringing it in! Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Congrats on the rare kyu! Glad it's in the forum community. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 Hi Ray, very unique sword. Are there any writing or characters on the Seppa or under the Fuchi? Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 5 Author Report Posted February 5 Excellent photos, Ray, just what I needed! Quote

Kotetsu1959 Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 The seppa have no markings. The only other markings I see on the sword may be a surrender inventory number on the guard, possibly “54.” The yasurime and precise shape of the sword are impressive to me. The fittings also show fine hand tooling. Although it was not cheap, I am very pleased with the sword. It is the only naval mounted Mantetsu I have seen. John Plimpton offered to sell me one of the Mantetsu gift tachi at the SF show back in the day. I am sad to say I failed to realize it was a bargain at $3,200. 2 1 Quote

Sounds like you might have some real grails in your collection! Including this mantetsu. Really beautiful. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted March 9 Author Report Posted March 9 Yes, We have that one. It's a cool one because it's got the modified Roman numerals on the mune that match the fittings "168" 1 Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted May 7 Author Report Posted May 7 Thanks Smith! Just an update. We now have 400 Mantetsu blades on file. Nothing new to report, if you have been following this thread. 3 Quote
PeterCollector Posted May 9 Report Posted May 9 Hello dear friends, I just want to post my Mantetsu sword. This sword comes from United Kingdom and was not stored properly, so some rust and dirt acumulate on blade, but in other hands it is untouched and uncleaned. Leather on scabbard is shrunk. I hope you will like the sword despite its condition. There is probaly also some kind of markings on pommel. Sorry for photos of blade tang, but it was not rotated by me So feel free to download them and rotate to proper position. Best regards Peter 1 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 9 Author Report Posted May 9 Here ya go, Peter. And thanks for the added photos! The stamp on the kabutogane, though can't see it well, is usually the "TO" of Tokyo 1st Army Arsenal Quote

Peter, can you check the date side of the tang, that is the side marked 昭和壬午秋, for any small M stamps. The flattened M stamp will usually be located toward the top, the bottom, or both top & bottom. If on the top, they are sometimes under the habaki. Quote
