Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Hey guys! My name is Manoo, i am very happy to join this nice community and will be very pleased if some of you or somebodys knowledge can help me sort this sword id bought in a privat auction from a seller living in the USA. I bought it as a Daisho with realy Junk Koshirae but also very nice 2 Tsuba. the longsword isnt in good condition. in a german community nobody can help me anymore. one told me it looks shishinto and a other public knowed guy told me it looks like a gendaito. he also translated the scratches/letters which are made later to the nakago. I bought this sword as Shinto Nihonto and the Wakizashi as a Koto. Mrs Kashima told me after looking photos, this sword looks like a sword made in sandwich construction but she didnt know what kind of. Lamination lines are marked in photos. this lines are also visible in Mune on both sides ura and omote until to kissaki. All we know is: Nagasa 70cm Sori 1.6cm motohaba 2.4cm sakihaba 3.2cm motokasane 0.7cm/7mm sakikasane 0.4cm/4mm Chu kissaki 4.2cm Masame hada- Ko mokume Hada at shinogi and masame again in JI. Gunome/looks like Sanbonsuki but round yakigashira, Hamon based on Nioi Boshi is Ko or O maru in suguha style- i cant explain because there is some kaen in the hamon. Hamon with activitys: Ashi, Kinsuji, Inazuma and some very big Nie, abu no me! Iori Mune nakago have a good patina in slightly black grey i dont know how to say. Yasurime is Taka no ha sword feeling heavy Meaning of Nakago letters: hinoto-toridoshi (丁酉年) 1957 Yūgure-sen (夕暮舩) Ship Yūgure
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 Now the Nakago and the 2 Tsuba Nakago Color depends on angle and light.
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Hi Manoo, unfortunately these are not authentic Japanese swords. Were these purchased on eBay from a dealer in Rockville, MD? 1
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 Now the Nakago and the 2 Tsuba Nakago Color depends on angle and light.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 Hi Ray thanks for the reply! I bought it on a privat auction but not on ebay. Mr Sesko told me it looks like gendaito but i bought it as shinto. its realy sad...right now because i payed a lot money. wakizashi also shortened very bad and not traditional
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Did Markus say gendaito after seeing the signature? This mei does not appear to be Japanese. 1
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 i realy will be pleased if someone can tell me why it isnt authentic and how i can tell it to the seller. because if it isnt he had betrayed me about a lot of money. and if i dont know if this sword is real i am scared send it for shinsa.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 he said it isnt a mei. he said it is maybe scratched after inside.because it looks very bad. but he makes the translation for me about facebook in privat chat.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 and after just looking to pictures he said maybe it is gendaito. but some other people told me the same. even after seeing this. there is no mei in it just a date 1957 and the name of the ship
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 mei on tsuba is only a name. MaroIchi
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 the blade is very hard like glas. the hamon is very hard. the masame ko mokume is very muji and tight. i cant understand what this is.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 wakizashi is muji hada and suguha hamon. but very poor polish
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Please don't take this the wrong way, but I would not plan to invest in shinsa. And if the date were 1957, then it would be a shinsakuto (newly made sword). if i dont know if this sword is real i am scared send it for shinsa.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 yes ray i know, thats why markus told me maybe it is scratched by an son of a dead soldiere from yugure or some other person which was in contact with that ship
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 thats why he told me it looks like a gendaito without a mei but a afterwork with this bad letters
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 he told me maybe the date is only the date of writing this letters. i talked with him in german but thats the point he want to explain to me
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 and i never have seen a fake blade with this kind of activitys and hada. i dont know what i have to think about....uff
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 While a mumei gendaito may pass shinsa if the team feels certain that it is a traditionally made blade (vs. a Showato), it is not very common to see and does not typically make financial sense to submit. http://www.nihonto.us/TERUHIDE%20KATANA%20DS.htm
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 From what I see your first post, it reminds me very much of what I see here. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=15&_stpos=33140-3036&_sargn=-1%26saslc%3D1&_salic=1&_fss=1&_fsradio=%26LH_SpecificSeller%3D1&_saslop=1&_sasl=Changtian-sword&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_fosrp=1 and i never have seen a fake blade with this kind of activitys and hada.
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 so you mean it isnt worth to send this kind of blade even it is/were "gendaito" - to shinsa? Thank you very much for that informations i never buy any items on ebay. the only thing markus said also was it looks handmade. because the hada and some other reasons. what do you think? i lile to hear many thinkings as possible because it scares me...ti think somebody take my money for nothing.
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Yes, in general I would not recommend investing in shinsa for an unsigned gendaito. so you mean it isnt worth to send this kind of blade even it is/were "gendaito" - to shinsa?
Samanosuke Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 the steel looks like my other swords from my collection. but i dont know it confuses me and i have no answer about it. the Ji looks very slight silverish but the whole blade isnt in good polish. do you think i should let make a polish?
Ray Singer Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 No, I would not recommend polishing the sword. What I am saying above is that I do not recommend putting more money towards these pieces. If they were sold to you as a daisho, that seems very inaccurate. Do they have matching daisho koshirae (mountings)? do you think i should let make a polish?

Do they have matching daisho koshirae (mountings)? Yes al fitting made of massive silver, Fuchigashira and same tsuba. plus one signed. but all wooden parts are realy junk. they are smashed and have a lot of cracks. but under the lacquer isnt any foundation of modern lacquering. the only difference is that the wakizashi have a kabutogane/ sayajiri and the katana one is lost.
