Ray Singer Posted June 25, 2018 Report Posted June 25, 2018 As I picked up a very interesting study piece in Orlando, I am releasing this one that I acquired for the same purpose last year. This is a koto wakizashi which appears to be from around the Oei period (1394 - 1428). The sword is ubu (this is a questionable mei of Nobukuni) and is unokubi-zukuri with deep koshi-zori, and having naginata-hi. Overall the sugata resembles a small tachi (a kodachi). I have included a number of photos of the jihada, which is a very beautiful itame (resembles that of a high quality Soshu sword). The jigane has a bluish tone. The hamon is a quite wild gonome-midare with tobiyaki, deep ashi, kinsuji, sunagashi, nado. Please note that there are a few hako-bore and kitae-ware, which are shown. The sword is not in perfect condition, but has volumes to offer in terms of quality. The sword comes with a black lacquer saya that has a brass kojiri and hanger (the sword was adapted to wear in WWII). There is also a silver foil habaki. $975 (plus shipping and PayPal) 3 Quote
Brian Posted June 25, 2018 Report Posted June 25, 2018 Like that a lot. Nice sugata and I am a sucker for well done naginata hi. If I had the cash... this would look lovely properly restored. Someone's getting a nice piece there. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 25, 2018 Author Report Posted June 25, 2018 I like both naginatanaoshi and well executed naginanata-hi as well. I own another piece (Tokubetsu Hozon to Nambokucho Nobukuni) in which the naginata-hi contain ken rather than to more traditional hi. The hamon on that piece resembles this one, which is why it initially caught my eye and that I felt it was worth further study (and a long time spent with uchiko to slowly improve visibility). 6 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted June 25, 2018 Report Posted June 25, 2018 Could we get photos of the fittings? Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 25, 2018 Author Report Posted June 25, 2018 Please see below for the dimensions. Nagasa: 53cm Moto-haba: 26mm Kasane: 5mm I will add photos of the saya and habaki shortly. Quote
tokashikibob Posted June 25, 2018 Report Posted June 25, 2018 Wow, Can't wait to you get tired of the Nobukuni, I better keep a few bucks in the lockbox. Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 25, 2018 Author Report Posted June 25, 2018 It will be a long wait Bob . I have owned that sword for 16 years and have not remotely begun to tire of it. It's one of my favorites... 2 Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 26, 2018 Author Report Posted June 26, 2018 John, the saya photos are attached. Perhaps making this more attractive, I will include this tsuba, tsuka and seppa which I fitted to the blade for no additional cost. Best regards, Ray 1 Quote

Ray Singer Posted October 16, 2018 Author Report Posted October 16, 2018 Thank you. The second sword (Nambokucho Nobukuni) is as you said not for sale. It is a long time member of my collection... Best regards, Ray 1 Quote
Death-Ace Posted October 16, 2018 Report Posted October 16, 2018 Forgot about this one! I was too slow to grab it, haha. Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 16, 2018 Author Report Posted October 16, 2018 When the sword was found out of polish I received a lot of skepticism that the sword was as old as Nambokucho considering the health (8.6mm kasane). 3 Quote
Death-Ace Posted October 16, 2018 Report Posted October 16, 2018 I hear you, Ray. The blade I have awaiting polish is about the same as yours was. Its health for a possible Ko-Uda. Thankfully, it seems blades like yours and others didn't see too hard a life and taken well care of. For the blade that was for sale, was there any news if it has been sent for a polish yet, by chance? Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 16, 2018 Author Report Posted October 16, 2018 Unknown Lev, but I will ask. Quote
Curran Posted October 16, 2018 Report Posted October 16, 2018 I don't like interrupting the sales thread, if this Oei Wak is sold. That said, I am a big fan of some of the Oei era smiths and Nobukuni was my first love. Attached is the O-tanto I still own. 6 Quote
Death-Ace Posted October 16, 2018 Report Posted October 16, 2018 Appreciate it,Ray! That is a lovely blade, Curran! 3 Quote
Jean Posted October 16, 2018 Report Posted October 16, 2018 Yes Oei is fascinating, the horimono and the sword sugata are a give away for Oei. https://www.nihonto.com/11-5-14/ 1 Quote
