Riogi Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 Hello,I'd like to get some help identifiying that sword (better pictures should come in a few days). From what I've understood from the guy who owns it, it's probably been made between 1890 and 1905. There's nothing written on the nakago. But every detail I could get about this sword could interest me and I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance! 01.pdf Quote
Geraint Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 Dear John. I am afraid that I am the bearer of bad news. Your sword is a recently made Chinese reproduction of a Japanese shingunto. Sorry. All the best. Quote
Riogi Posted June 18, 2018 Author Report Posted June 18, 2018 Thanks. I'm obviously no expert here, that's why I came on this board. 1 Quote
IJASWORDS Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 To Brian/Administrators, would it be possible to start a new category called "FAKES AND COPIES"? It would be a great help to novice collectors and first time buyers. So many newbies are getting "burned", and this is a great example to kick it off. It actually made me sick to the stomach to look at it, yet so many new less informed buyers are being sucked in. Almost every day we see a post of a dubious sword, and this forum could act as a reference for buyers to know what to look for before purchase. What a great public service this could provide. As noted in previous posts, copies are getting better and better, and this could be a good way to stay on top of things. I commend this suggestion for members to get behind. Neil. 1 Quote
b.hennick Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 I suggest the JSSUS website link to a section on fakes http://www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html Quote
Brian Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 As a start towards that, I have added a tag called "Fake" that can be used when someone is sure it is, or when we identify them then myself or a mod can edit the post and add the Fake tag to the post. When looking at a section, you can immediately see posts with that tag, or even search for them by tag.Tags are a very under-used feature on the forum, and maybe we should start using them more.I can add pre-defined ones as needed. When you look at this thread, top left..you will see it is now tagged as fake, and if you hover over it, you can search for other content labelled as fake. 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted June 18, 2018 Report Posted June 18, 2018 I suggest the JSSUS website link to a section on fakes http://www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html Barry, thanks for that link! Excellent! I've bookmarked it for future conversations like this. Quote
Riogi Posted June 18, 2018 Author Report Posted June 18, 2018 Hello.Just a precision. It's not "my" sword. It's currently on sale so I didn't got burned. When being new to a domain, I try to listen to people who actually have some experience. But thanks again for your help. I'd definitively not have appreciated being screwed.Oh, for further reference, here's the link to the ad of this sword: https://www.leboncoin.fr/vi/1411445655Kind regards 1 Quote
Shamsy Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 There is a fake thread I started for NCO swords. I have a few new ones to add some time. Can we tag that too? Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 A stickied thread identifying fakes would also be a valuable resource. Quote
Jon MB Posted June 20, 2018 Report Posted June 20, 2018 Except that the one thing fakers seem not to do is undertake any kind of complex research. So that would be of some assistance to them. Maybe. Quote
Riogi Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 Strangely, as soon as I published the link here, no more news from the seller... 1 Quote
