dancingbear038 Posted June 3, 2018 Report Posted June 3, 2018 I was asked by the widow of my dear friend if I could help her find the value of her husband's sword collection. The first one I asked for a translation of the signature on the tang was identified by the members here as gundaito forged by Kojima Kanenori with Yasugi steel. Here are the rest of the pictures, to try and get some kind of a value. I recently saw a Kanenori, very similar to the one I have with a buy it now bid of $6,500.00. Please let me know what you think. Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 3, 2018 Report Posted June 3, 2018 Not a gendaito. The SHO stamp indicates that this is a Showato, a mass produced sword which was not made using traditional sword forging methods. The $6,500 Buy It Now price is very ambitious. Best regards, Ray Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted June 4, 2018 Report Posted June 4, 2018 Well under $800-$1500 USD, the blade is in poor condition and would need significant restoration and then it only has interest among military sword collectors. Quote
dancingbear038 Posted June 4, 2018 Author Report Posted June 4, 2018 Can anyone tell me the meaning of this stamp? Thomas B. Quote
mywei Posted June 4, 2018 Report Posted June 4, 2018 As Raymond said the stamp has the character 'Sho' - means it is a non-traditionally made non-tamahagane sword Quote
SteveM Posted June 4, 2018 Report Posted June 4, 2018 Thomas, you need to go back to your original post and check the translation I provided. In fact, this thread could be tacked on to that earlier thread, it seems. I agree with John above about the value of the sword. I think $1000 would be ambitious, given the condition of the sword, but the market for militaria seems to be reasonably healthy these days. 1 Quote
