John A Stuart Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 Hi All, Here is a tanto for sale at Christies. I know there are Masamune fans out there. Masamune or ? John Quote
paulb Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 I think the concensus is Soshu possibly Hasebe Kunishige. It is thought to be an important Soshu work (but the catalogue doesnt say by whom) Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 10, 2008 Author Report Posted May 10, 2008 Hi Paul, I see there are no papers for this tanto and attributed in the auction as Soshu, which indeed seems highly likely. The kinzoganmei would preclude passing shinsa and it is an high estimate. John Quote
paulb Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 HI John, Yes I agree it is a high estimate. To be honest I have stopped trying to understand both auction houses estimates they dont seem to follow any logic. In the same sale is the Yoshimitus tanto which is also unpapered. It sold in 1992 for 22K US$ but is estimated in the auction at 25-35UKpounds more than double the 1992 price. Quote
Guest Lee Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 John, The Nagasone Kotetsu Katana #238 is what I would bid on. I thought about bidding on one of these . You got to think after you win , how do you get it shipped safely ? I was going to bid but the thought scared me off. The only way is to have Christie's send the sword to New York office . Has anyone purchased from an auction far off (Big Money) ? Lee Quote
Pete Klein Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 http://christies.com/LotFinder/lot_deta ... ID=5078425 Sweet! And I wouldn't be surprised if the strike price is higher than the estimate. Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 10, 2008 Author Report Posted May 10, 2008 Hi Lee, I have had items sent from auctions, but, not big money like these fetch. Usually there are lists available from the house of local shippers that will pick-up the item, crate it and transport to you. Most have insurance available, so, you are protected from a monetary loss. One time, out of the states I had a sword in shirasaya with koshirae/tsunagi sent in two huge wooden crates. The sword, only worth $9k, cost a few hundred in shipping. I couldn't believe the massiveness of these crates when I got them. I have stored them in case I need to ship a couple of cars somewhere. Most houses are very good to you, after all 20-25% buyers premium is a huge profit for them. John Quote
Mark Green Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 That Yukimitsu ain't too shabby, either. That would be my pick, or maybe the Tadayoshi. Mark G Quote
