There should be a sticky of the list of the renouned eBay scammers and thieves.

Ditto, i have a few to put on that list myself, IMO it is a must have list, you can also have a good dealers on Ebay list as well. I think a Feedback Forum would be a great place to have those lists, most forums put it under the sales forums.

I have always regarded ebay as a complete no no, for nihonto at least. I have heard so many horror stories that it has completely scared me away. I suppose for a very experienced collector there can be some good buys, but all I tend to see are lists or threads such as this one. Has anyone gotten a truly good deal, for a nihonto, on ebay? I would be really interested to hear some success stories. Hermes that is a great idea, and for someone like me it would be an absolute mst have before bidding on anything.

There are lost of good deals on eBay and unfortunately also some bad ones. But as long as you get more goode ones than bad ones it is okay. I have found many great swords on eBay and also quite a few bad ones or in some case did not receive what I had paid for at all. I would want to think that on few occasions there have been Juyo class blades offered on eBay right out of the wood work.

There are many trust worthy sellers on eBay and it remains a fun place to hunt. However caution ought to be appplied.

The forum's official position is to discourage newcommers from hitting eBay, and will always be the position. You must be prepared to lose a lot and will be conned a few times.

That is not to say that most of us don't use eBay (some buy and sell...some just sell) but it is really a case of "do as I say, not as I do" :)

Stories of finding a hidden treasure or the proverbial "sleeper" don't mention the countless bad deals and money losses. If you do eBay...don't cry when you get junk sometimes. :)

Not much to discuss really..it is all pretty logical and well known.

Ive been had on several occasion, even been had right here so do not foul yourself to think that eBay is the bastion of evil bad traders, it can happen everywhere, just like good deals could happen everywhere, even on eBay! granted you have to know what you are purchasing.

... granted you have to know what you are purchasing.

And from which seller!

There are still some really good and honest sellers on eBay, like:

kanetoyo2666, showa22, fujisanblack, daimyou54eb ... and perhaps few others we can trust so far.

Hi:

I hada problem with Daimyou54. I bought some menuki from him that turned out to be redproduction. He reluctantly accepted their return. I returned them and he says they never arrived. Many emails and no satisfaction. He is on my bad guy list.

I must say that like Loren I'd love to hear a validated story of a real sleeper that was found on ebay. I would have thought that with all the checking that the online sword community does that nothing even vaguely good goes unnoticed.

...as for blades popping out of the woodwork and subsequently getting Jyu etc...any records of the original ebay ads and a subsequent and corresponding NBTHK certificate that anyone has actually seen? I'm really curious about this because it sounds like an urban/internet myth to me. :dunno:

just stirring the pot a little ;)

Well..the Keith Nobuhira Austin tanto found by a member recently was one. Not Juyo of course, but a really good find. I think there was a write-up on a sword in a recent JSSUS newsletter that also came from eBay, and I think there are more. But this isn't of course justification for eBay speculating, as for every one good deal there are hundreds of bad deals. But there are some out there.

Barry, thank you very much for proving my point exactly. The reason there isn't (and will never be) a list of recommended sellers, is that few are totally consistent. What is a good seller for some, can be a bad experience for others. I have had a few bad comments about just about every dealer and seller. Yes, there are sellers that are more trusted than others, but who writes the guidelines as to what makes a good seller or a bad one?

I have bought swords from some of the more popular sellers and wondered why certain flaws such as fukure etc slipped out of the photos shown. Sometimes shipping has been a bit high compared to what they paid. Doesn't make them a bad seller, but who is the judge? Some of the sellers with bad comments, I have had fair and honest service from.

Basically this is a call that I can't make, and hence ask about a seller if you like, but you will have to make up your own mind whether to deal with them or not.

If we post a list, then ultimately we become responsible for the actions of that dealer and what he does.
