Hi Milt, The one mon on the fuchi looks like Inari motif of kitsune, very foxlike. Here is a chart of various billfish which I think is what the kozuka has artistically rendered. John

Having seen some diving in the keys I think IMHO they actually look more like a species of needlefish. They are smaller without the sail and are failry slender

 

For you sushi lovers : Needlefish / Sayori

Needlefish live throughout the coastline of Japan but they are mainly abundant off the southern coast of the country. The needlefish has a very unique figure because their chin is longer than their nose. Needlefish (Sayori in Japanese) are a school fish and they live in top water. They grows to about 12 inch long (30cm). The best season for this fish is spring and it comes directly from Japan.

The front end nanako is worn smooth, actual color of the worn area is darker than the pics shown.

I immediately thought of a needle type fish, it reminded me of a fish used for bait to catch marlin and other bigger game fish that I have used to troll with. Some nice finds. oh yeah, you would know if you had photoshop- it is a major program that most don't want to bother with, too many options and tools. Sad to miss another one and I would really love to be in one of these famous auctions that I have heard and read about for years (there are even mentions of them in old sets of JSS bullitens that I have). Thanks for sharing.

I was looking at several catalogs/books etc.

Most of the koz with that style are labelled Ichijo ( some signed as such ).

 

I quote from one entry........

Kozuka : shibuichi, hira-zogan of silverand shakudo, with touches of katakiri. Signed Hokkio Ichijo ( and kakihan ).
