Ford Hallam Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 This is a little something I've just started to experiment with. As and when I get interesting pieces in my studio I may, with the owner's permission, do similar little explanatory film clips. And I'll get the close up focussing sorted as I get better at this sort of filming. "Tosogu Insights with Ford Hallam - Episode 1" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3td3YAE7Q7E 12 Quote

Guido Posted March 30, 2018 Report Posted March 30, 2018 Fascinating – can’t wait to see how it gets restored / re-patinated! Btw, this fuchigashira seems to depict Bashikō 馬師皇. 1 Quote
Ford Hallam Posted March 30, 2018 Author Report Posted March 30, 2018 Hi Guido, apparently the figures are from a Kabuki play depicting the Chinese sage Huangshi Gong on Horseback and the Chinese warrior Zhang Lian mounted on a dragon. I was going to talk about that when I do the next bit http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/21978 1 Quote

Pete Klein Posted March 31, 2018 Report Posted March 31, 2018 This is from 'The Art Appreciation of Japanese Sword Fittings' by Shigeo Fukushi, page 50 and I believe it is the theme Ford mentioned: Sorry for the distortion on the left page but scanning this is difficult without damaging the binding. 1 Quote
