Iida Latches

How about this, an Iida latch sword given to FDR by Gen. MacArthur. Seems rather strange he gave him a really tatty example (perhaps it belonged to a Japanese officer of some import?) There is a video of the sword as well.

Maybe the blade was exceptional.

The following is an extract from an article 'Forward with Roosevelt' [I Have Returned - General MacArthur and FDR] held by The National Archives, Franklin D Roosevelt, Presidential Library and Museum.

The White House had asked the General to change his declaration from “I Shall Return” to “We Shall Return” but the General refused. The animus between FDR and Gen. MacArthur goes back many years. As early as 1932, when he was still Governor of New York FDR told a close advisor that he thought Douglas MacArthur was one of the two “most dangerous men in America.”
