The reproductions are surprizingly accurate, with details of chisel strokes that enable checking for forgeries. Includes many lesser smiths not usually found in modern books. seattle1 Posted March 14, 2018 Report Posted March 14, 2018 Hello: Willis Hawley, the publisher, describes them as rubbing, and they were rendered as woodblock reproductions in the production process, and many people have found them useful in various ways. For me the most useful feature is the accurately reproduced yasurime. That is a feature of nakago assessment that is critical, but often undervalued, for if you know the approximate time of blade manufacture the yasurime tends to be pretty invariant and if it deviates one should be very cautious. Knowing just what angle they should be would be a challenge for a faker who might otherwise get pretty close with the mei as their parameters are less likely to be entirely the same blade to blade.
