No, i would not clean it Jay.

 

Only use choji oil. Do twice a week with a smooth cotton tissue very gently. You will see your piece will become better and better over the time.

flowering plum tree (UME no HANA).

If it were mine, I would remove the red (active) rust with a pointed piece of antler, ivory or bone before using CHOJI oil.

Thanks guys, will post new pictures when I'm done cleaning it up!

 

I don't have ren wax unfortunately, so a mild soap wash, scraping with bone and choji oil will have to suffice.
