Edward S Posted February 25, 2018 Report Posted February 25, 2018 Hello one and all, I have a Gunto with a Mon which I cannot identify. If any member knows the meaning (Almost certainly a family name) I would be grateful. The sword is a Yasushige. Best Wishes, Edward S Quote
SteveM Posted February 26, 2018 Report Posted February 26, 2018 梅﨑 Umesaki? I think maybe its just the surname written in the style of a kamon, rather than an actual kamon of that family. 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted February 26, 2018 Report Posted February 26, 2018 I've heard of officers without a proper Samurai family background or Crest would have these Mon made for them. Quote
Edward S Posted February 26, 2018 Author Report Posted February 26, 2018 Many thanks to Steve M and John for taking the time to look at my post. Alhough I am new to the NMB, I have observed it for years and I have never seen a similar Mon, I hope other members may have other examples with definite ID of the mark. The theory of an officer without a family crest having this specially made is not one I have previously considered but I guess it makes sence. All the best, Edward S Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted February 26, 2018 Report Posted February 26, 2018 Steves translation is about as definite as you are going to get . Does anyone know if you have the officers name , Umesaki , whether there are sources in Japan where you can get details of officers who had the family name Umesaki . Ian brooks Quote
Edward S Posted March 1, 2018 Author Report Posted March 1, 2018 Hi Ian, I do not have the Officers name via a surender tag or other documentation. If there is a data base of names of Officers that had a Yasushige made I have never been made aware of it. For now Umesaki from Steve M is the best opinion I have and I will adjust my records for this sword accordingly. Thanks. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 1, 2018 Report Posted March 1, 2018 No database as such exists. My only guess would be the Japanese military service archives to find your man, which would be quite an adventure. For now a simple note will be handy (I have small package slips with all the details of each sword in a lacquered maintenance box). Quote
