Noah,

It is a WWII era Japanese officer sword. It is the second one I have seen recently with this mix of Type 3 handle on a blade with all the rest of the fittings Type 98. You can see the differences here: http://ohmura-study.net/902.html

It was common to see blades without signatures during the war. Swordsmiths were given huge quotas to fill and signatures took time. I'm not entirely sure which scratch marks you are seeing, but nakagos normally were made with file marks.

Do you know anything about the number that happens to be on the nakago?

It's an assembly mark. I would say this sword was made earlier on in the war due to the nakago being devoid of any signature or stamps and the decent quality of the Koshirae.

It's assembly mark/number,normally match with the Seppa(spacer) and Tsuba(Handguard)。But not all Seppa&Tsuba numbered.

Lovely sword Neil. I'm a big fan of Type 0, specifically because I like the ito. You could get a really unique niche collection if you focussed on 98 with this style.
