Nische Posted February 15, 2018 Report Posted February 15, 2018 Hello, I’m very new to collecting Japanese swords and very interested to learn. I would like to know more about this sword. I believe this is a Type 98 with an officer tassel. There is also a signature and date on the Tang that I am curious about. Any additional information would also be appreciated. Many thanks, Ray Quote
vajo Posted February 15, 2018 Report Posted February 15, 2018 Typ98 with Tassel correct. Smith is Kane Sada ( i would say) one of the showa smith. I see the stamp but i can't say what kind from the picture. Nice Sword and fittings. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 15, 2018 Report Posted February 15, 2018 I agree with Kanesada. The date is Showa ju Hachi Nen Ku gatsu (Sept. of 1943) Grey Quote
Nische Posted February 16, 2018 Author Report Posted February 16, 2018 Thank you all very much. Happy to be a part of the forum and looking forward to learning. Ray Quote
Stephen Posted February 16, 2018 Report Posted February 16, 2018 Ray auction coming up in your neck of the woods soon https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/Japanese-mantetsu-manchurian-railway-katana-swo-302-c-e1949ccb03 Your Gunto is a nice clean example well done. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted February 16, 2018 Report Posted February 16, 2018 That's a textbook example of a Type 98, very hard to be improved upon. Very nice condition with just enough wear and patina, really great start to a collection. 1 Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted February 16, 2018 Report Posted February 16, 2018 There are 2 Showa smith name 兼定(Kanesada) ,One is Seki smith 岡田定男(Okada Sadao),one is 高橋兼定(Takahashi Kanesada). Not sure whitch Kanesada here. Date:昭和十八年九月 (Showa 18 years 9 Month)1943,September. Quote
David Flynn Posted February 16, 2018 Report Posted February 16, 2018 I think the stamp is a poorly struck Na (Nagoya Arsenal) stamp. 1 Quote
Nische Posted February 16, 2018 Author Report Posted February 16, 2018 I should have the sword in hand in a few days. Once it arrives, I’ll take some closeups of the signature and post. Thank you all again. Ray Quote
Nische Posted February 27, 2018 Author Report Posted February 27, 2018 Sad ending to the story as I had to return the Type 98 sword to the seller in New Jersey. Upon arrival, I saw that the seller had packaged the sword in one UPS Express tube. The problem is, the tube was 38 inches long. The sword was 40 inches. The sword was damaged as expected as the Tsuba was sticking a good two inches outside of the box. Yes, there was bubble wrap around the exposed portion, but damage still occurred. The seller was just as heartbroken as I was and gladly accepted my return for full refund. A NOTE TO ALL, I am still looking for my first Officer Gunto. If you have a nice one in your collection that you would consider sharing with a new collector, I would be interested in hearing from you. My budget is around $1,500 with preference to one having a tassel. A USA sale would be most convenient. Kindest regards. Quote
Nische Posted February 27, 2018 Author Report Posted February 27, 2018 Cant make the auction?? Hi, unfortunately I can’t make it in person and was looking for a Saya in better condition. I would be willing to go even higher than $1,500 if the right one comes along. Thank you for the tip however! Ray Quote
