christianmalterre Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 this is very interesting Stephen! i confess, i never have seen such yet. definitely looks like/as iron as you say....very interesting! do nothing despite study and care! as soon you do aply any sort of oil or wax it will forcefully change its colouration- and you do not know how wax or oild reacts with the pottery! Stephen Posted February 8, 2018 Author Report Posted February 8, 2018 Christian yes i agree. I would be very hesitant to even do test area on back in fear of ruin. IM awaiting professional advice. Quote
John A Stuart Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 It looks just fine the way it is. John Quote
Stephen Posted February 8, 2018 Author Report Posted February 8, 2018 What? no clear coat of krylon??? ....i kid. Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Stephen, Great Dragon! A very nice looking piece, no wax or oil. Care is simple, mild soap and luke warm water as needed....Voila. -StevenK 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 Stephen, that is just marvelous, but it may be difficult to work it into a TSUBA! Seriously, is that pottery and not cast iron? Astounding! If it were iron, I would just brush it to remove the red rust. As pottery, leave it as it is. But I bet it is iron! Quote
Stephen Posted February 9, 2018 Author Report Posted February 9, 2018 Lol for very big sword! 15" tsuba! I abhor red rust! I will find out when it gets to Buyee and shipping is calculated! Quote
Brian Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 I also can't see that as pottery. Really? Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted February 10, 2018 Report Posted February 10, 2018 Amazing skill! Luckily or unluckily most of that is repetition of the one description line, ★古琉球? 古鉄調 龍紋 飾り大皿/古箱付★ = *Old Ryukyu? Old iron appearance, dragon pattern, decorated large dish/ with old box* and a mention at the end under 'condition' that the string has rubbed slightly in one place near the ring on the back. 1 Quote
Ed Posted February 11, 2018 Report Posted February 11, 2018 If it is pottery made to look like old or rusted iron, then I would leave it as is. 2 Quote
Stephen Posted February 14, 2018 Author Report Posted February 14, 2018 Wow! Shipping $125.00 Maybe discard it! Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 14, 2018 Report Posted February 14, 2018 It is almost 15 inches in diameter, probably relatively heavy, and fragile. But $125, Ouch, I feel your pain.....what to do? -StevenK 1 Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted February 14, 2018 Report Posted February 14, 2018 Or is the price calculated by using the evil volumetric weight table? In which case you may be able to add other items to the package for the same fee. Worth asking perhaps. 1 Quote
Brian Posted February 14, 2018 Report Posted February 14, 2018 Bet that is EMS. Ask for SAL, or ask if a member there can store for a bit. That sounds like a price given to deter export. 1 Quote
Stephen Posted February 14, 2018 Author Report Posted February 14, 2018 Price is what it is, about the cost to ship express to SA. SAL is 95$ 6.92kg = 15.5 lb id hate to ship that to out of Conus I'll pay the difference compared to waiting a month to get it ill just have to wait til available monies, they have free storage for 30 days. Stephen Posted February 22, 2018 Author Report Posted February 22, 2018 plate arrived help with translation of lid would be appreciated. If interested please PM Quote
Brian Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 So it really is clay/porcelain?Please describe it a bit., Rough/smooth? Heavy? Fragile? Really nice detail, and I like it a lot. I wonder if it was just decorative.Nice unique item. Quote
Stephen Posted February 22, 2018 Author Report Posted February 22, 2018 Yes clay, It is stout but would break if dropped, rough texture has rubbed marks with white showing on back, they will be shown in FS section after i receive translation. Very well packed (two styrofoam layers, post pix in FS ad) and should survived any PO as long as not dropped kicked. very heavy, so shipping will be expensive. Id have to say just decorative. Im sure if i served caprese salad the olive oil would stain the plate, lol Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 Not to mention the balsamic vinegar! LOL. -StevenK Quote
Stephen Posted February 23, 2018 Author Report Posted February 23, 2018 Always served on the side Steve. unless its for just me then i don't mind the muddled look! lol 1 Quote
Stephen Posted February 28, 2018 Author Report Posted February 28, 2018 Well contrary (my middle name) to consensus on how to care for it, I broke out the toothbrush and got the Renaissance wax to work. Looks good to my eye, like a rusty tsuba would under same care. Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 Your piece, your call. But, IMHO, what sets it apart from the usual Yixing based Japanese ceramics is the "faux iron/rust" thing. If the "rust" did not come off with normal cleaning, the effect is as the potter intended and should not be altered. But, ultimately, your happiness is all that matters. And as for the contrary thing........it keeps life interesting! Cheers, -StevenK Quote
Stephen Posted February 28, 2018 Author Report Posted February 28, 2018 Well if the wax was cleaned off it would rust again, iron oxide does that....lol 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 That's why I'm not concerned. After all, you broke "THE RULES", and somehow managed to avoid triggering the apocalypse. You must be doing something right! LOL! -StevenK 1 Quote
Stephen Posted February 28, 2018 Author Report Posted February 28, 2018 Both dragons are happy to be cleaned of all the black soot that came off...they did tell me that i swear....lol 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 28, 2018 Report Posted February 28, 2018 Thats the main problem with dragons, one is fine, when you have two or more they never shut up! -StevenK p.s.- black soot will never do. BTW, are there any markings on your piece? 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 1, 2018 Report Posted March 1, 2018 Is it just me, or does that not look just fine? In the past I have been guilty of applying too much Ren wax; you seem to have got it right. 1 Quote
