Would anyone help with this inscription? Thank you very much in advance.

Also, an insight into school/age would be of great help.

Sergei

P.S. There will be more soon, please stay tuned:)

I'm not a tsuba expert, but the Bushu/Choshu schools did this sort of carving.  This seems to me to be a classic guard from those/that school.  Very nice.  Cheers, Bob

Looks like "Chōshu Kawaji ju Hisatsugu saku" to me.

You can try yourself for the next one and come back here to discuss your results ;-)

Thank you, Uwe. I found the guy. Yearly 19th century. A look alike piece is in the Hartman Collection, 1976.

I'll try the next one, but if it has any kanji that were not on the previous pieces, I don't expect a success:-).

Sergei,

This isn't rocket science - it can be a bit tricky but you can handle it. Spend an hour reading around how to count the strokes in kanji and how the radicals work and it will give you the nuts and bolts. After that just try to do a couple every day - the Aoi website is good as the items are described in Japanese and English so you can take a stab and then check and correct yourself.

Have fun!!

OK, let's try. I read this as Masaharu (probably the guy from Nomura school in Edo, mid 18th century). Am I right? But what's the strange thing below "haru"?

Any clues?

Now, I am checking my learning abilities. This signature to my reading must be Hidetomo. Please let  me know whether I am right or not. :bang:
