YOJIMBO Posted January 21, 2018 Report Posted January 21, 2018 Hi I have the option of buying or exchanging. I quite like it. I was intrigued by the rythm. I do not have a picture of the rest of the armor now, but that's not even interesting. The only thing that interests me is this. Any comments to this? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 21, 2018 Report Posted January 21, 2018 Middle finger and thumb of left hand? Which Bosatsu or Buddha? Perhaps a site something like this? http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~houon/butu-bk01.htm 1 Quote
DaveT Posted January 21, 2018 Report Posted January 21, 2018 Possibly export engraving and zogan. is this a go-mai-do by any chance? Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted January 22, 2018 Report Posted January 22, 2018 Here are the Mudra hand positions with English text: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/mudra-Japan.shtml Looking at the position of both hands it looks to be associated to Amida Nyorai: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/amida.shtml Amida is sometimes shown with right hand pointing upwards with no thumb to middle finger connection, as shown. 1 Quote

My view is that it is an evolution of the do, some may say it's an aftermarket embellishment to attract a sale from gaijin visitors. Many Yukinoshita were used for this due to the mae-do being a solid plate. I have one that is decorated with mon. Quote
Guido Posted January 22, 2018 Report Posted January 22, 2018 Am I the only one who thinks the armor was sent to an amateur carver in Borneo for embellishment ...? 3 Quote
YOJIMBO Posted January 22, 2018 Author Report Posted January 22, 2018 I understand. Does this DO also have a higher monetary value? For comparison, I only add the shape of DO. It's mine, it looks like this, but it's made of iron. (the carving is about 20 cm) Quote

Baka Gaijin Posted January 23, 2018 Report Posted January 23, 2018 Good evening all., Regarding the Talismanic aspects of decoration upon Katchu. From my understanding, they were far more subtle and bound up with the particular Ryuha of either the owner, or Han's Oku (Secret, is not quite the term, but close) teachings. Essentially, the real deal would not be so obvious. Dave is on the button with the suggestion that this is a later addition for export. Guido, have you noticed the "Borneo" image you posted, bears an uncanny resemblance to the late, great Walter Matthau. Quote
