Justin Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Just wondering if there is any interest in a Japanese Armour forum (in addition to nihonto and tosogu). I collect a bit of samurai armour and accourtments and would like to be able to speak to other collectors. This might help to broaden the scope of the message board. I think most collectors of nihonto also have some interest in armour and related items. Any thoughts ? Quote
Ed Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Justin, I would think this an appropriate topic under the "general discussion" heading. Quote
Nostro Titus Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I'm not an armour collector (yet ), but had to do a lot of research regarding the construction and development of Japanese armour. I would be all for a forum for armour discussion. That way I can finally be educated further by the real armour gurus. Nostro Quote
Brian Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Nostro, Until the forum grows a bit larger, I will keep the armour (armor for our US friends ) forum within the general discussion. If there proves to be more interest in a dedicated forum over time, I am happy to set one up. In the meantime, feel free to post as much as you like about armour in that section. On another note, when I first became interested in Nihonto and the Samurai..I went through my weapon reference library to see what books I had on the subject. One of the first I found was a book that I didn't even remember I had..called The Manufacture of Armour and Helmets in Sixteenth Century Japan Great book, and still available at a good price (around $55 ) on the used book searches. Nostro Titus Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Thanks Brian. There is a copy in one of my favourite hide-aways (Cultural history museum Library). I assumed it is no longer available, will go a-hunting now. Nostro Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Well here is my first posting in the armor forum! I obtained a zunari kabuto of uncertain age, which i will strip of its urushi, and repaint with either urushi or some other kind of laquer... It is intended to be used for my Samurai re-enactment group which i am forming at the moment here in the Netherlands. I asked a few people about wether or not it is of very old age, but so far no luck.. and i probably wont wait much longer to start restauration work on it.. need to make new shikoto too.... here are some pics! PS... Ill post updates on the restauration if you like......... KM Quote

kusunokimasahige Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 As long as i dont look like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Archaic-Japanese-Sa ... otohosting ill be fine......... TY for the Haiku tip!!! now write it down in kanji!! KM Once upon a time a powerful Emperor of the Rising Sun advertised for a new Chief Samurai. After a year, only three applied for the job: a Japanese, a Chinese and a Jewish Samurai. "Demonstrate your skills!" commanded the Emperor. The Japanese samurai stepped forward, opened a tiny box and released a fly. He drew his samurai sword and * Swish! * the fly fell to the floor, neatly divided in two! "What a feat!" said the Emperor. "Number two samurai, show me what you can do." The Chinese samurai smiled confidently, stepped forward and opened a tiny box, releasing a fly. He drew his samurai sword and * Swish! * Swish! * The fly fell to the floor neatly quartered! "That is skill!" nodded the Emperor. "How are you going to top that, Number three samurai?" Number three samurai stepped forward, opened a tiny box releasing one fly, drew his samurai sword and *Swoooooosh! * flourished his sword so mightily that a gust of wind blew through the room. But the fly was still buzzing around! In disappointment, the Emperor said, "What kind of skill is that? The fly isn't even dead!" "Dead is easy," replied the Jewish Samurai. "Circumcision ... now that takes skill!" kusunokimasahige Posted November 27, 2006 Report Posted November 27, 2006 I asked an armour expert in Japan wether or not this was a possible combination, and he told me it was. i am nearing completion... have to relace and redo a lot, but then it might even become a nice gusoku after all!! DanBaker Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 I'd be keen to see an armour forum in the future I know a small amount about nihonto and next to nothing on Japanese armour... might be a great educational tool Quote
