Hello,

I would be most grateful for any help translating (or explaining) the presence of this element on a Jujiro themed fuchi/kashira. Is it a signature, or simply a good luck/fortune inscription.

Many thanks in advance,

Marc

It's almost identical. I think it's not uncommon for a school to produce almost the same objects. Some of the members here have a lot of knowledge and will help you with the seal and the school.

My guess: the seal is the artist's "art name". This one says (I think) 東雨, which is probably pronounced Tōu.

Sorry for hedging my bets on this one. Tōu is actually the art name of Tsuchiya Yasuchika (土屋安親) , an artist working in the late 1600s - mid 1700s, so this name doesn't match with the attribution of Yanagawa.
