toukerb Posted December 12, 2017 Report Posted December 12, 2017 Hello, I would be most grateful for any help translating (or explaining) the presence of this element on a Jujiro themed fuchi/kashira. Is it a signature, or simply a good luck/fortune inscription. Many thanks in advance, Marc Quote
Blagoy Posted December 12, 2017 Report Posted December 12, 2017 Hi, I can't help with the kanji, but is very nice Daruma/Bodhidharma set. Love this subject for tosogu. Look like some kind of seal. Best regards Quote
toukerb Posted December 12, 2017 Author Report Posted December 12, 2017 Thanks for the rectification on the theme. It helped me find the following set which seems to be from the same shop (nearly identical except for silvering of certain details, and the menuki ) which they claim is of the YANAGAWA school: https://darumasan.blogspot.fr/2004/11/menuki-sword-fitting-and-tsuba.html Quote
Blagoy Posted December 12, 2017 Report Posted December 12, 2017 It's almost identical. I think it's not uncommon for a school to produce almost the same objects. Some of the members here have a lot of knowledge and will help you with the seal and the school. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 12, 2017 Report Posted December 12, 2017 I think that is your man/school for sure. Post in the the Tosogu section, might have more luck. Quote
SteveM Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 My guess: the seal is the artist's "art name". This one says (I think) 東雨, which is probably pronounced Tōu. Sorry for hedging my bets on this one. Tōu is actually the art name of Tsuchiya Yasuchika (土屋安親) , an artist working in the late 1600s - mid 1700s, so this name doesn't match with the attribution of Yanagawa. 2 Quote
toukerb Posted December 14, 2017 Author Report Posted December 14, 2017 Many thanks to you all for all of your useful comments Quote
Henry Wilson Posted December 14, 2017 Report Posted December 14, 2017 Steve has it right. 東雨 an art name of the Tsuchiya Yasuchika. Nice work but probably not by the man himself IMHO. Quote
