C0D Posted December 6, 2017 Author Report Posted December 6, 2017 Hello Guido, i know Giorgio, we met before and i had a tsukamaki done by him, but i'm looking for more options out there Quote
Keiji Posted December 6, 2017 Report Posted December 6, 2017 Hello Guido, I think Giorgio never went to DTI. Quote
Guido Posted December 6, 2017 Report Posted December 6, 2017 Hello Guido, I think Giorgio never went to DTI. Then we met at Mr. Kurokawa's party? If not, he has some twin walking around Tokyo (or my memory is completely going down the drain, which I can't rule out ... ). Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 6, 2017 Report Posted December 6, 2017 Mike Hickman-Smith makes saya and I have seen some wonderful examples of his lacquer work. 1 Quote

Kronos Posted December 7, 2017 Report Posted December 7, 2017 I never heard of him, do you have his website or any contact? I can't speak to Mike's lacquer work (although I've heard it's very good), however he's made me a shirasaya in the past and it was excellent, at least as good as most I've had from Japan. 2 Quote

Gakusee Posted December 7, 2017 Report Posted December 7, 2017 Mike is a well-respected and talented collector and sayashi. Attached is a photo of him and his stall at the Chiddingstone Castle 2014 token taikai organised by Ian Chapman and Paul Bowman. What a great event that was! 5 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 7, 2017 Report Posted December 7, 2017 Just had word that he is flying back from Lapland(!)and will communicate when he gets back. Quote

DaveT Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 I can personally vouch for Mike Hickman Smith. I've studied urushi nuri for years as a Katchushi, but saya needs a higher level of finish. My opinion as a trained Shokunin is that Mile is the leading urushishi in Europe. Forget Van Dam, Mike is your man. 3 Quote
paulb Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 In support of other comments Mike has done some fantastic work for me and I have seen some exceptional pieces he has completed for others. He has a great talent and his commitment to contunual imporvement is incredible. A small correction to Michael's remarks on Chiddingstone.: this event was very much Ian's success my own involvement was purely supporting his effort. It was an excellent show! 1 Quote
cisco-san Posted June 4, 2018 Report Posted June 4, 2018 Hello, Sorry for restarting this thread. I am looking for somebody who is making Shirasaya here in Europe. I think Mike is too overskilled. Within EU would be great.. Many thanks Klaus Quote
cisco-san Posted June 5, 2018 Report Posted June 5, 2018 Hello, no, but HP seems not working?! http://www.habaki.co.uk/home.html kind Regards Klaus Quote

cisco-san Posted June 6, 2018 Report Posted June 6, 2018 I have to find somebody else which is able to make a shirasaya here in Europe for me. It seems there is a shortage of honoki...... Quote
cisco-san Posted June 15, 2018 Report Posted June 15, 2018 Unfortunately no luck. I would be happy if somebody has another idea about a Sayashi here in Europe. Many thanks Klaus Quote
general_piffle Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 I understand you saying Mike is 'over qualified' because his work is excellent. However his fees are really very reasonable. If you're investing in a sword to get a sayashi or koshirae made why not invest in the best? It will last longer, be of better quality, and hold its value. Another vote for Mike Hickman Smith here and a picture of the koshirae he created for me. He's a gent and super reliable. Quote
BIG Posted June 24, 2018 Report Posted June 24, 2018 Hi Klaus, here is a german sayashi.. https://www.nihonto.eu/de/restauration/schwertscheiden/ Best Quote
