Thekirsh Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Hi All I have just watched a double edged sword go up on ebay and just as fast get taken off. The owner was flooded with offers. The oricale (google) shed little light on exactly what is this strange blade? Is it rare ? Valuable? I would love to know a little about them. Attatched is the auction photo. Thanks Simon
Rich S Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 The style is fairly rare. It is modeled after the famous sword, "Kogarasu Maru" from the 12th (?) C. There have been numerous smiths who made this style in later times, but it is still a fairly rare form. I have seen it made in all sizes; tanto, wakizashi and tachi. One of my favorite designs even tho I've never owned one. Rich S
Stephen Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 was there any more photos and a link so we can check it out?
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 This thread reminds me a Kogarasumaru copy made from the Northern Manchuria Railway I once read about... Would be interesting in seen if this is another example mounted as Shingunto...
Brian Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 This would have been a very interesting auction. The blade could be something really nice, or just average and unusual. Can't help thinking about the Gensui-to that Jim Dawson mentions in his book... http://www.stenger-scott.com/Export24.htm#PlateSP-1 but it is unlikely one of these got remounted in Shin-gunto mounts. Would love to see more of it. Someone contact the seller and refer him here. Brian
Thekirsh Posted April 14, 2008 Author Report Posted April 14, 2008 Hi Thanks for the information Richard. Now I'm a bit wiser to what it was !!! I will contact the seller as I did ask for extra photos ( NMB Training ) so he may send them on and I can post them. Here's the link Stephen http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :IT&ih=016 Maybe a NMB member bought it ? Thanks Simon
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I might let you know if it is good. Regards, Max
Brian Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Max, is that a subtle wink implied there? If you got it, congrats, and can't wait to hear more about it when you get it. Brian
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Hello Brian, I know so far that it is housed in so called Shingunto Officers mount. The board mebers are welcome to make hints as to the smith who made it. Regards, Max
Thekirsh Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 Well if a winks as good as a nod to a blind man, congratulations Max I hope it turns out to be something exciting ! Simon
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Well, I am still taking your guess as to who made this sword. I think I may have a pretty good guess. My guess starts with a S I will give the resolution when the sword arrives, until then everybody please feel free to post your guess / Kantei.
pcfarrar Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 The last one I saw was a Gassan Sadakatsu. http://www.nihonto.ca/sadakatsu-3/index.html
Darcy Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 And it was outrageously good. Will be the cover girl on the gendai volume when I eventually get there...
Brian Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 And it was outrageously good. Yes...I certainly was! Wow..beautiful. Max...if yours is good, you owe the forum a round of drinks  Good luck. Brian
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I will post some pictures when it arrives. Only thing that bothers me a bit right now is that it seems to be a bit short in length. For all of you that missed on this possible Gassan blade, here's another one: http://cgi.ebay.com/FINE-GASSANSTYLE-SA ... dZViewItem
Brian Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 The one you just posted about sounds and looks like a modern repro :? Brian
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 The one you just posted about sounds and looks like a modern repro :? Brian Brian, I guess you've skipped the smiley at the end of his post... :D
Brian Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Well..just in case anyone missed it and was seriously considering it. Brian
James Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Nanshoku-Samurai, Any further photos / info on this ?
IanB Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 The Royal Armouries collection contains two examples, one by Motohira in a gunto mount the other by another shinshinto smith whose name escapes me (senior moment ). There is another in Liverpool Museum with a long sayagaki to the effect that some retained smith (this time I'm excused it must be twenty years since I saw it) was ordered to study the original and make two copies. The daimyo selected the one he liked and gave the other to the smith. Ian Bottomley
Ed Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 While catching up on some of these posts I have not had time to read, I saw this one. Max, just curious as whether or not you have received your sword and when you were going to post additional photos and/or what you think of it. They are quite difficult to come by, and personally I have only seen in hand two, and photos of two others(both in this thread). The Gassan Darcy posted was just phenominal, in fact I attempted to purchase it, but was too late. While we are waiting on Max for some photos I will share another with you guys. Unfortunately, I do not have any decent photos of it. The double edge gives me fits, and I can not seem to shoot any worthwhile photos (I hope to have Darcy photograph it at some point). I am including the oshigata of it from when it was featured in the NTHK's "Token-To Rekishi". It was polished, papered and has sayagaki by Yoshikawa Sensei.
Stephen Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Max has this come in yet, were all waiting for the other shoe to drop. :D
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Hello Folks, unfortunately I can't release information on it yet. I will do so as soon as possible. Thanks, Max
dkirkpatrick Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 Max, this reminds me of the old joke "How do you keep an idiot in suspense?.....I'll tell you later!" Anyway, as you can see we are all dying so at least throw us a bone as to WHEN you might reveal the discovery of the second Amakuni!!!
Brian Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Max has emailed me a complete reason and explanation for not releasing any info that is completely valid and understandable. I would ask everyone to be patient with this one, as it is incredibly complicated and serious. Nothing worth waiting in suspense for either, so let's let this one lie for now and hopefully more can be revealed. I'll open it again if and when it is ok to do so. Thanks for your understanding. Brian
