Harvey Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hello to all, I fear this sword is very modern and probably has no value to a collector of early swords. To me it looks WWII or maybe a bit earlier, but I've never seen a short version like this. I hate to bother you guys with a sword like this one but I don't no where else to get an opinion. What is it and what value does it have? Thanks in advance, Harvey Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi Harvey. IMHO you have a nice Meiji period short police sword. From Fuller and Gregory's "Military Swords of Japan" page 64/65 : Quote
falconj Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi Harvey, Looks like a Japanese 'mounted police hanger' or 'short sword' with the mounted police badge on the upper back strap of the hilt, looks like type 1 of 2 types shown see page 189 of Fuller and Gregory's Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks regards John Quote
Brian Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Harvey, See if that blade can be dismounted from the fittings easily? I think there is a chance that this houses an earlier wakizashi blade, and might be forged. You see this occasionally. Can you see a hamon anywhere? Brian Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Yes Brian, The one I have has no shinogi. Midpage below the kyugunto, http://www.johnstuart.biz/new_page_12.htm , but it can't be taken down John Quote
Stephen Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 in order to get at the nakago the end caps in the case of Police swords have a nut that needs to be taken off. it does look like it may house a forged blade. Quote
