Akitombo Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Hi, I have noticed that it is hard to find who the dealers in Japanese swords and fittings are in areas, not only in the UK but when you travel around. It seems a good idea if a data base was built up by those in each region, that is if you want to give away your supply lines. Since I live in the South-East of England, prehaps I could start; Lanes Armoury The Lanes Brighton Sussex Hythe Antiques & Interiors 166-170 High Street Hythe Nr.Folkestone Kent Don Bayney Grays Davies Street London W1 Blunderbuss Thayer Street London W1 Can this be added to? Brian Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 David, If you check out the NMB links lage above, and read the description popups, I have tried to at least give the country where the dealer is, and maybe his name and other info that I was able to find. Obviously this can be expanded on, but it is a step closer. Of course this isn't a recommendation of any dealers, but info on most of them can be found by searching the forum. Regards, Brian Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 David, out of the UK dealers you've listed only Don Bayney has a good reputation. The others have vastly inflated prices, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Well, I wantn't judge their prices, but the quality is usually good here too : Hans Joachim Eschbaum in der Kumme 132 D-53175 Bonn Robert Burawoy Rue le Regretier Isle Saint Louis F-75004 Paris Galerie Dutta rue des Etuves 21 CH-1201 Genève Quote
Akitombo Posted April 12, 2008 Author Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi, I agree that Don is the best in London, you can sit down , have a cup of tea, look at the stock and even if you do not buy anything, he is great to talk to. The other three, Hythe Antiques is very keen on tsuba prices, but it is quality over price, too many arms dealers put shin-gunto out at insane prices, just because they are Japanese. In France, I understand Robert has retired, is this correct anybody? Regards David Quote
Jean Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Yes, Robert Burawoy retired a few years ago. He was the best dealer in France for kodogu, armour and swords. He invited me several times in his flat in Ile St Louis in Paris. Tremendous flat make of gathering of different flats on contiguous buildings with internal stairs. A real museum, a fabulous Library. Walls covered by books on shelves and armors, Bows on stand with quivers. Once I went to dine to his home, he had taken out from his vault his tanto collection included his famous Muramasa and an incredible collection of Kerys, having told him once that for me Pamor was the next best steel after Japanese one. You have three other dealers in Paris who can have from time to time outstanded pieces. Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Yes, Robert Burawoy retired a few years ago. Sorry. I've to update my records.Didn't know he is no more in business. A real gentleman. Hope his collection will be cared and maintained, on due time and not dispersed. and an incredible collection of Kerys, having told him once that for me Pamor was the next best steel after Japanese one. And Persian crucible steel of course :D . Guess we share the same taste. We should discuss this privately. Quote
Brian Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Just as an off topic...I have 9 nice Kerises in my collection Brian Quote

Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 I shall say that for Robert, Pamor comes second to Japanese steel "De gustibus..." :D For me it comes (close) 3rd. 1) nice Japanese steel, 2) persian crucible steel 3) indonesian keris steel Watering on persian "wootz" blades are, IMHO, close to high level Japanese works : Quote

An old Granpa and Babooshka hobble past him through the softly nestling snow. "Ivan my Love" says the near toothless crone. "What is it Natalia my little pumpkin?" replies the wizened old man. "Take me behind the Dacha and make love to me against the fence just like you did 60 years ago, when you came back from Stalingrad..." "How can I refuse my sweet little petal" says the old man and they wander off into the whirling misty whiteness. The Russian Cop is intruigued and follows the ancient pair behind the Dacha, where he observes them. The old lady turns around and the old Gentleman prepares himself, whereupon they twich and pulsate, scream and jump for twenty minutes untill they both collapse in a heap. After some time they get up, and arm in arm hobble past the incredulous Russian Cop. "Sir, I could not help but observe; Tell me sir, what is the secret of your amazing virile strength?" Says the Russian Cop. The old man looks quizzically at the Russian Cop and replies: "Sixty years ago the fence was not electrified...!!!" Cheers Malcolm Quote
