TheGermanBastard Posted November 20, 2017 Report Posted November 20, 2017 Hello, I'd appreciate any oppinions on these Koi Shakudo Menuki as to whetere you feel they are good quality and maybe a possible school. I am unfortunately way too stupid about Menuki ... Thank you, Luis Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted November 20, 2017 Report Posted November 20, 2017 Hello Luis, My guess would be cast disguised to look otherwise, not 100% certain (but not hand made), I do not see any shakudo. Poor quality regardless, sorry it's not better news. No worries, we all started somewhere. 1 Quote
Higo-san Posted November 20, 2017 Report Posted November 20, 2017 Hi Luis, I agree with Franco that these menuki were originally cast. However, they are still authentic late Edo-period menuki in my eyes. You can see that additional work steps were done after the casting process (like carving details, gilding and so on). Furthermore, they are bent on the backside which is also a sign of authenticity. Regarding quality, I suggest you to take a look at the fine examples from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (you can view many items online by using the search function on the MFA website) and judge the quality by yourself. Best, Chris Quote
vajo Posted November 20, 2017 Report Posted November 20, 2017 But these are fine ones to complete a sword. I'm sure that someone who needs menuki for a carp theme would really like this menukis. For collecting it is not the right ones. Quote
