mywei Posted November 18, 2017 Report Posted November 18, 2017 Who knows? Maybe it did have a mei once upon a time, but it is now effectively mumei. Even the sayagaki says it is mumei, 2nd generation Bunki era. Looks like healthy tanto btw 1 Quote
bulbasabrrr Posted November 18, 2017 Author Report Posted November 18, 2017 Thanks Matt, i did now about sayagaki translate, helpfully information. Quote
Shugyosha Posted November 18, 2017 Report Posted November 18, 2017 Hi Dan, The annotation normally used by the NBTHK where there is a mei that cannot be accurately read is 不明 - fu mei - meaning unclear. I think that the origami reads mu mei instead suggests that the shinsa panel felt there was nothing there by way of signature. It's a lovely blade by the way. Best, John Quote
Geraint Posted November 18, 2017 Report Posted November 18, 2017 Dear Dan. I am sure you know the stories about Muramasa blades and their use by families opposed to the Tokugawa, It would be possible that what you see is the place where the mei once was before it was erased. (I suppose that it is also possible that someone has made it seem that way), In any event you have a nice sword but Matt is right, it's mumei now. Enjoy. All the best. 2 Quote
vajo Posted November 18, 2017 Report Posted November 18, 2017 It often happened that the signature was removed. Look in the books "Japanese sword stories" from Markus. There are examples why the mei was removed. That does not just affect the swords of muramasa. But indeed it is a very nice sword. Cheers Chris Quote
