lonely panet Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 ok guys, trying to make a bit of light fun out of a post about tassels. got 3 pics of a naval ball tassel. IS IT REAL OR FAKE???? winner gets a years supply of non-stick AIR, complaments of the enviromnent 1 Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 I'll take a stab, although I am a noobie, this can be fun! My initial gut instinct was that it was a fake, just the white and yellow is just too white and yellow, but I cannot actually see anything wrong with the "production?" or the style of the tassel. Waiting to be corrected Matt Quote
Windy Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 First time I’ve seen a naval tassel ball......so I’m oot. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 Same here, and I'm not at home to prowl through my reference books. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 Did you get that from a time travel machine Quote
paul griff Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 Hello, Never seen one like that but it looks very well made and nicely woven...Also appears silk as opposed to an artificial material like rayon...In which case I opt for REAL...! Regards, Paul. Quote
vajo Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 I never saw this before. Looks like new, but if you look deeper in the pictures there are some signs of wear. For me it looks genuine but i can't judge something what i never seen before Thanks for showing. Quote
J Reid Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 Never seen one.. but I'm going with fake. The tassel looks elasticized! Quote
Toryu2020 Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 Never seen that color combo - I'll say modern repro Quote

IJASWORDS Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Pulled out a couple from collection. Probably don't qualify for your quiz, but I like 'em. Neil 1 Quote
vajo Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Very nice swords Neil. What blades are in the type98? Chris Quote
IJASWORDS Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Hi Chris, a Copper handle NCO on left, then SESHU JU YOSHIKUNI (Kanbun 1661), then GENDAI Morita KANESHIGE, and lastly, SEIKI/MINO UJIFUSA OWARI (a model '94). Thanks for asking. Neil. Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Neil. I love that type 94. Very nice piece. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Neil's post reminded me of a problem I have: How can you tell the difference between a late-war IJA officer tassel and a IJN tassel? I've been told the IJN's are darker, but when you have 70 years of fading, they look the same to me. 2 Quote
vajo Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Bruce the IJN Tassel is only brown. The IJA Tassel is blue and brown. Is a late war tassel looks like a IJN Tassel? Quote

IJASWORDS Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 In the hand, its not too hard to tell. In the picture below, left IJ Navy, centre IJ Army, and the right late war IJ Army. The way to tell the late war apart, is that it is lighter and brighter than the Navy tassel. Hope the picture is clear enough to tell the difference. By the way, the late war officer tassels in my experience are quite difficult to find. Neil. 1 Quote
IJASWORDS Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Do these "babies" qualify? Neil. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 other than color, no distinguishing differences? Hrmph! Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Well if YOU have one Neil, I’m sure of it’s authenticity, but I have no idea what it is! Do these "babies" qualify? Neil. Quote
IJASWORDS Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Pictured was a Japanese WW2 General officers dress sash, worn around the waist. The tassels are a woven metal thread (and heavy!). Neil. Quote
Shamsy Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 I have only two tassels. One a late war officer blue and brown that I took off a pattern 8 NCO. Then I have the red one I think I read was around major rank. I honestly know nothing about tassels other than what I can read in books. I avoid them because I couldn't recognise a fake and I find them a little fragile for my liking. Probably should get one NCO tassel though. I will post them tonight, see what you guys think. Here they are. What do you think? 1 Quote
paul griff Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 Hello, Both look fine to me...First one is a nicely worn silk company grade army tassel and would compliment any any shin-gunto with a " campaigned" appearance...Second one in red and brown for army field officer major or colonel and very nice,it's silk , the crown and slide being nicely woven...This one I feel would compliment maybe a " minty" type of shin-gunto.. Only my opinion of course and have been known to be wrong...! Regards, Paul.. Quote

I'm always leary of the new looking ones because of the fakes out there, but this one looks right. Quote
