Windy Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Picked up my second gunto yesterday. A Type 98 joins my Akihisa....so I suppose I can now class it as a 'collection'. Unlike the Akihisa, don't think this 98 is particularly special, and happily I managed to get it for what I believe to be a good price (as auction house didn't list it particularly well). Blade is unsigned, not even any stamps. Does have a nice mon on the tsuka, which I believe is maru ni mitsu kashiwa. Also has a fairly decent leather combat cover on the saya. Saya looks to be in a pretty good state, reddish brown finish. But haven't tried removing the cover. When I collected it, was covered in a large amount of grease, but has cleaned up nicely. Although tsuba is a bit loose now, so I need to fabricate or buy another brass seppa. 1 Quote
EdWolf Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Hi Matt, that is a nice sword. Congratulations. Regards, Ed 1 Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Hi Matt, If you can't find brass seppa, leather works really well. 1 Quote
Windy Posted August 17, 2017 Author Report Posted August 17, 2017 Think I'll go with a leather fix for the time being. In time I'll probably make a brass one myself. I need to research the mon a bit, seems there were one or two families who associated with the kashiwa mon. I was surprised there wasn't even an arsenal stamp on the nekago though. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Very nice addition to the collection Matt! You are officially doomed with the rest of us now! Ha! Enjoy! 1 Quote
Dave R Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Seppa are about the only thing I will buy from China, they do some fairly decent ones cheaper than I can make them for, equally online martial arts suppliers do them (probably Chinese made as well). Bear in mind, you should always have an even number of seppa, in pairs with one either side of the tuba. I have read elsewhere that a spacer seppa made from bamboo leaf is within tradition. 1 Quote

I've found a site here in the U.K. that sells pairs of brass or copper seppa for about £5. I'll probably give them a try. Quote

Windy Posted August 17, 2017 Author Report Posted August 17, 2017 Temporary leather seppa installed. Brass pair ordered. Final result and pics of nakago. 1 Quote
Geraint Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 Dear Matt. Pierced tsuba and all, nice one. All the best. Quote
Shamsy Posted August 17, 2017 Report Posted August 17, 2017 A nice sword, exhibiting age and use, my two favorite qualities in the sea of 98s. Unsigned blades are not uncommon at all. Any traces of painted kanji on nakago? There are plenty of genuine seppa around too if you would prefer the real deal. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted August 18, 2017 Report Posted August 18, 2017 Nice score, pierced tsuba and family mon, blade looks good too. Quote

Dave R Posted August 18, 2017 Report Posted August 18, 2017 I doubt it will be etched, that's more a thing for the Western style Kyu-Gunto. Possibly oil tempered though, so a genuine hamon without much activity. With it being unsigned the probability of it being traditionally forged is low. You have probably seen this before.... Quote
Windy Posted August 18, 2017 Author Report Posted August 18, 2017 Cheers Dave. A handy little list. Can just about make out the hamon in this pic. Gunome midare??? Quote
