Rickisan Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Good Morning- Request assistance translating the paperwork on a new tsuba I purchased from Ed, over at Yakiba. I bought it because of the unusual design on it, (I havent seen this particular design in any books, online stores, ect...) But I am very new to this, all things are possible. I beleive its Nanban, the dimensions 8.1cm x 7.4cm and its Mumei. The papers are NBTHK: Hozon-Tosogu, and would like to see if the papers give an idea of the design, or additional information. My best guess as to the "brass" shape would be either; 1. A roof of a temple. 2. A genie lamp. (That tells me i've been in the desert to long) I have attached pictures of the papers and a few of the tsuba if it will help. Any assistance will be very welcome. Thanks, Rick Quote
Rickisan Posted March 26, 2008 Author Report Posted March 26, 2008 Guys- I took a shot at the second column. I think it says, Heisei ju ku nen roku gatsu niju ichi hi. Does it mean 21 June 2008? Thanks, Rick Quote

Markus Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Hi Rick, The papers state the motif as "tôryû-mon" (ç™»é¾é–€), which means about "the gateway to success". It derives from a legend which says that a carp who is able to ascend (tô, noboru ç™») the rapids of Lóng-mén (é¾é–€, jap. pronunciation "tôryû") - at the middle course of the Yellow River - turns into a dragon. Markus Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 Any clue if I got the date right? Almost. Heisei 19 = 2007 (1989+19-1, the first year counts too) Quote
Brian Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 If it was 21 June 2008 they they would have caught up any backlog, and been quite a bit ahead of their time  Brian Quote
Ed Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 Rick, Sorry, I thought I sent you the following info: The papers list it's design as "Toryumon zu", which loosely translates as "to overcome great obstacles". This is generally seen in the motif of a carp swimming up a waterfall. Quote
