Doc L is the man. He is helping me with the attribution of a fuchi -kashira and I thought I would show them off. The kozuka is?

The Kozuka is Shiiremono or mass produced from the Yokohama docks or some such place and probably form the Meiji era. The kashira is pretty much the same I think.

Generally, signatures on wood like on your tsuka are the mark of the tsuka maker. I think form memory, this was common in the Meiji through to Showa periods.

Just my thoughts.

I would have to agree with Rich's assessment too.

The kozuka was in fact made from a thin stamping ( this is why there is such a noticeable dent on the face ) which is then given a thin electroplated coat of gold to highlight some details.

Dear Brian

Thank you for the additional photographs – also for the private one of your impressive sword display. I am afraid that I have to agree with Richard and Ford regarding these kodÅgu. The poor quality of the nanako work; the crude rendering of the images; and the brownish colour of the shakudÅ all support a label of Yokoya-mono work, as he has suggested.

The question of tsuka-hei on the base of the tsuka has been dealt with in an article posted by Robert Benson at:

You mean Hama-mono (objects made for export and shipped from Yokohama during late Edo- and Meiji-period). Yokoya-school is something else and definitely worth not to be confused with Hama-mono.
