Hi Roy.

(Please add your name to your posts as per rules.)  What you seem to have is a civil sword mounted as a gunto, the saya looks like a handachi mounting, the tsuba is a Namban one.  The mei is not what you should be too excited about, have a compare with this one and note the shape at the very tip of the nakago.  http://www.sho-shin.com/hankei.htm

Regardless a nice thing.

Enjoy.

Don't try and translate sword tangs literally. Most Japanese wouldn't read them like they are supposed to be read.
Forget what they said...you already have the answer above. Legit? Probably not. But doesn't mean the sword is bad. More false signatures than real ones some say.

For once,

There are 3 essential points to check out on Hankei's nakago.

1 - Overall shape of the nakago,  this one seems matching

2 - very deep machi.

3 - Lack of tagane makura (hankei always engraved his mei like horimono).

Roy, you have the answer above in multiple posts. The signature reads Hankei (the name of smith). Suggest Paul Martin to help with the process of submitting for authentication. Please do not have this restored by an amateur or anyone other than a certified Japanese togishi (polisher).

Where would I send it to for certificates to authenticate it please.

see, http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/20321-nthk-2017-west-coast-shinsa/

If you cannot attend this show, highly recommended, you could still contact the show organizers and/or members here on NMB to find help in submitting your sword. Should your sword pass shinsa there will likely be at least one of 2, if not both, fully trained polishers in North American in attendance at the show to consult about restoration, as well as dealers who offer polishing services to Japan.

Very sorry to hear that Roy. Reach out if you need help reaching Paul or need any further feedback on your sword. Paul can be found through these links below.

The recommendation to send to the upcoming NTHK shinsa is also a good one. Thomas Helm I believe has a service for mail-in: NTHK2017@TORYU-MON.COM

Mr Raymondsinger in your judgement would be worth having authenticated meaning does it seem fairly correct for HANKEI's work due to treatments I have limited funds I want send it in and even have restored ,maybe fair to say it could pass???

Roy, I would rather leave that to a shinsa team but if it were mine I would absolutely send to San Francisco. That would be a starting point before considering restoration. You would be doing yourself a disservice proceeding with restoration or selling the sword until it has been evaluated.

Best regards,

Ray
