Kanjisan Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 I am looking at a Soshu blade that is pointing toward Hasebe. That is, hitatsura, O-itame with a strong masame in the yakiba and toward the mune. The problem is, it is a 19.5" wakizashi with a Funa-Gata Nakago that appears Ubu and Shinto. The only way around this is if the blade is O-suriage, which there is indications it might be. For example, the hamon runs all the way to the rust and, even more striking, the shinny area of the blade runs under the kiri file marks of the nakago approximately one inch. My question is, are there O-suriage blades where they have gone to the trouble to totally reshape the Nakago to resemble the original ... or that is consistent with the Nakago of the representative school? DSweet Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Someone with more experience would be better equiped to answer this with more certainty, but... I would say that it is a possibility. I have a mumei Wakizashi that is Unokubi-zukuri which gives you the felling that it is nakamaki naoshi or naginata naoshi. Yet the nakago appears ubu and is futsu kuri-jiri. The sword i mention shows no other signs of being cut down though, so it is really hard to say. And i don't know enough yet to make even a semi accurate guess. Maybe you could post some pictures of the nakago and get a few others opinons on it? -Donovan Quote
Brian Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Allan (Don't forget to sign all posts with a name) I think a pic will definitely help with this one. Easier to look at it that try and visualise it. Regards, Brian Quote
