Mark C Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Hi All, Know very little about these but here goes. Wave pattern with various sea shells, The unusual thing (haven't seen one before) is that the gold rim that runs around the bottom edge of the Kashira is part of an insert (picture). Is this a sign of a better made Kashira Any help on age would also be a great help. Many Thanks Regards Mark Quote
docliss Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Dear Mark Your assumption that the presence of an insert inside a kashira is a sign of a better made one is quite correct. You should realise, however, that the term ‘better made’ is relative rather than absolute. This is to say that, when it was originally purchased, your kashira with an insert would have cost more than would an equivalent one without an insert. It does not say that your kashira is, by reason of its insert, a high quality work - sadly, it is not. Am I correct in thinking that the kashira that you posted is of iron, with assorted sea shells rendered in high relief copper? Neither the quality of the carved waves, nor the lack of detail on the sea shells are indicative of high quality work, and your kashira is typical of that being produced by the Aizu ShÅami school during the C19. This is, I suspect, its provenance. Regards, John L. Quote
Brian Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 IIRC, there was a post here about kashira and/or fuchi that have a separate rim like this. But I have been searching, and can't think of the correct terms to use in the search. I seem to remember Milt mentioning one he has. I agree with Dr L's statements. Will have to search a bit harder and see if I can come up with the post. Brian Quote
docliss Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Dear Brian I believe that the topic you are referring to is that posted by Robert C. Walker on Mon Oct 08, 2007. John. Quote
Brian Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Thank you John. That's the one. Not too much info, but worth a look. It is at viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2164 and also has a good section on guri-bori worth re-reading. Brian Quote
Mark C Posted March 13, 2008 Author Report Posted March 13, 2008 Hi John, Brian, Thanks for the info, makes a good informative read. Its a shame mine isn't like that one   John - The Kashira is made of a soft non-magnetic metal, a small scratch (already done before i obtained) on the inside reveals a copper/brass colour. The shells are of copper. Yes, I relalised that it wasn't of great quality by the carving of the waves and I put the shell details down to wear. Again, many thanks Regards Mark Quote
Robert C. Walker Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Here are photos of mine, with the "insert". Quote
