Some Japanese collectors/sellers have a similar approach:

All of them:

That is only put there to indicate the correct alignment and which side faces which direction. Few boxes are perfectly symmetrical and fit best one way.

If I must mark them, it is usually with a label-maker label on the underside.

Most of the boxes are custom fitted, so it helps identify which box for which tsuba in those rare instances when they need to be in a box.

I know and it is really handy, but it also adds a nice personal touch.

I place a small post-it-note on the top of the box.  I prefer not to do anything which cannot be undone but I can see no harm in placing a small seal as you are doing.  I wouldn't do it on any 'important' box such as an important historical box, Fittings Museum box or one with a hakogaki.

I have a maple leaf shaped stamp that I put so that I know how to align the two parts of the box. It also lets me know which is the top and which is the bottom.  I agree that "historical boxes " are best left alone.

Hi Florian,

If you mean a layer of veneer on the top of the edge of the box seen when opened then that is quite likely an original feature of the box, not something added later.

All the best.
