Teimei Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 Hi, just interested to know, if i am the only egomaniac on the forum with this habbit! What´s in the BOX? Some Japanese collectors/sellers have a similar approach: All of them: regards, 1 Quote
eternal_newbie Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 Can't speak for others, but personally, I don't do anything to a tosogu box that I wouldn't do to a shirasaya. Quote
Brian Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 That is only put there to indicate the correct alignment and which side faces which direction. Few boxes are perfectly symmetrical and fit best one way. 3 Quote
Curran Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 If I must mark them, it is usually with a label-maker label on the underside. Most of the boxes are custom fitted, so it helps identify which box for which tsuba in those rare instances when they need to be in a box. Quote

Pete Klein Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 I place a small post-it-note on the top of the box. I prefer not to do anything which cannot be undone but I can see no harm in placing a small seal as you are doing. I wouldn't do it on any 'important' box such as an important historical box, Fittings Museum box or one with a hakogaki. 6 Quote
b.hennick Posted May 13, 2017 Report Posted May 13, 2017 I have a maple leaf shaped stamp that I put so that I know how to align the two parts of the box. It also lets me know which is the top and which is the bottom. I agree that "historical boxes " are best left alone. 1 Quote
Greg F Posted May 14, 2017 Report Posted May 14, 2017 I just put a small red dot on the seel to align the correct sides for proper fit but not on on a couple of my better boxes. Cheers. Greg Quote
Teimei Posted May 14, 2017 Author Report Posted May 14, 2017 I wish i had some premium boxes! The best i have so far, is an older one that someone lined with a darker wood at the seam. Quote
Geraint Posted May 14, 2017 Report Posted May 14, 2017 Hi Florian, If you mean a layer of veneer on the top of the edge of the box seen when opened then that is quite likely an original feature of the box, not something added later. All the best. Quote
Teimei Posted May 14, 2017 Author Report Posted May 14, 2017 Hi Geraint, yeah exactly what i meant. Just looked a bit off to me. regards, Quote
