tesscoothome123 Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 Hi All, Hoping someone would be kind enough to help translate this shirasaya for me. This one is way over my head and any help would be appreciated. Best Regards, John Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 Not sure whether to believe my eyes but this seems to be describing the sword's provenance. Since 40+ members have looked but no-one has yet commented, let's get the ball rolling a little. No books, hands free!!! 矢上家先祖傳来亡寶口也高野山僧正住禅證之 where 口 = I can't read this one yet. Yagami Ke senzo denrai bo/nakunari Ho X nari KoyaSan So Masazumi? Zen akasu kore.....................? PS Half-way through I had to reach for the books! Quote
Shugyosha Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 Hi Piers, I believe the missing kanji is 剱- tsurugi/ sword. I had a look but, whilst I got some parts of the script I couldn't make it into a sensible whole. Best, John 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 Dang, John, you beat me to it. Just found Ken, variant!!! So, updated: 矢上家先祖傳来亡寶剣也高野山僧正住禅證之 Yagami Ke senzo denrai bo/nakunari Hoken nari KoyaSan So Masazumi? Zen akasu kore Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 Haha, well, in the absence of anything else, and breaking all of Mr Morita's rules, let's stick our neck out in order to collect ideas! "Passed down in the Yagami/Yakami family, death, treasure blade, Mt Koya priest, Masazumi Zen sect? attests to this"(?) 3 Quote
Nobody Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 矢上家先祖傳來之寶剱也 高野山僧正性禅證之 This is a treasured sword transmitted from an ancestor of Yagami family. A sojo of Koyasan, Shozen proves that. 6 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017 NOBODY Sama, great to have you back!!! Many thanks. (Have you been away?) Quote
tesscoothome123 Posted May 8, 2017 Author Report Posted May 8, 2017 Hi All, Been home all week sick and beat my head against the wall for days and could not even get a repetition of two or three that made sense. Now seeing what you all came up with, could have spent another week and still come up different. Will post some pictures of blade later for all your help. Came back with a veterans estate I had bought a while back. Best Regards, John Quote
Brian Posted May 8, 2017 Report Posted May 8, 2017  Awesome translation, and very, very interesting sword. So is this then certified by a priest from Koya-san called Shozen? Quote
