John A Stuart Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Hi I hope I am allowed to relate a funny story in regards pronunciation. I was wanting a map of a specific area and went to the tourist bureau in Osaka in some mall. I am like a baby with my Japanese and not knowing if the woman to whom I spoke was English speaking I introduced myself and asked for a map of this area. The Japanese for map in romanji is 'chizu' which I pronounced as chee zu. I had always thought the 'i' in romanji pronounced as a hard ee sound. After much surprise and confusion I got what I needed conveyed and received my map but the woman originally thought I was asking for cheese. I found this more funny than her although she joined in my laughter later. She spoke good English by the way. What has this to do with the above, well I have since softened my sound for 'i' and would now pronounce gimei as gi may. No rule here I am thinking. Comments? John BTW This is only for 'i' within a word not at the end as in habaki. J. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Comments? Yes. She was asking your proposal for a date for dinner in a veiled manner and you lost a good occasion... Quote
