LDR Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 A friend has been given the task of selling off a widows husbands small collection of a sword and tsuba. The tsuba will be posted in the other forum. However can people give their opinions on this sword. The fittings look like world war 2, but the blade which is signed has a real hamon. Could this blade be earlier? Perhaps it would be possible to get opinions on age, school, and a rough value at what to sell it for, i will then pass on this information to my friend. Any help or opinions on this would be much appreciated. Thanks Lewis Quote

LDR Posted March 4, 2008 Author Report Posted March 4, 2008 I've managed to get some more pics of the blade. from what i;ve been told there arent any real nicks or openings. There is also a stamp. Quote
Stephen Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/military.htm the above link shows you about the stamped blade, non traditional made, id price it area of being fair to buyer and seller between 500-1000. Quote
LDR Posted March 4, 2008 Author Report Posted March 4, 2008 Thanks again stephen, looks like the stamp is Seki. I presume the value give is in dollars? Quote
Stephen Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 my bad yes in dollars, on ebay it could net up to around 1500 and up. what was the cutting edge, from tip to munemachi, or notch where the brass collar fits? Quote
LDR Posted March 5, 2008 Author Report Posted March 5, 2008 Sorry for the delay. I havent got the sword in hand, and am going through someone else. they measured it from tip to tang. Quote
Guest Nanshoku-Samurai Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Blade is a Seki Showato but polish remains nice so 700 - 1200 on eBay. Quote
Walter Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I have the Showato with Seki stamp signed Yoshikane Taniguchi with nice "hamon". Of course it's not traditionally forged blade and hamon is just for the "show". I wonder, how they made the 'artificial hamon" ... acid etched? Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Walter, Although your showato is not traditionally forged the hardening will have been either oil or water quenching. Kyu-gunto had a brushed hamon that was just a superficial cosmetic hamon. Some kyu-gunto had true nihonto though. John Quote
