Windy Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 How come the Dawson book is so hard to come by? Was it a very limited run? I'd love to get a copy, but they all seem to be in the US and over £100! Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 That would be my guess. And that's how much I paid for mine, too! Quote
Windy Posted April 4, 2017 Author Report Posted April 4, 2017 Given the interest that surrounds the field, you'd think the publicist would consider a reprint? Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 If you're talking about this book: http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/books/b510-swords-imperial-Japan-1868-%E2%80%93-1945-cyclopedia-edition They are still in print and available. Grey 1 Quote

Grey That's the one Grey. Can't seem to find it in the UK.....unless I'm being a dullard?! Quote
Ed Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 $125 was the original release price. Doubt you will get one cheaper. It is heavy so it would be better to get it in UK or at least Europe to save on shipping. It is a very good book, worth having it shipped if you can't find one local. 2 Quote
Shamsy Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 It is a fraction of a decent swords cost and will return many times it's value if you begin collecting military swords. 2 Quote
paul griff Posted April 4, 2017 Report Posted April 4, 2017 Hello Matt, A copy sold for,or rather it was advertised for £275 with a militaria dealer in Cheshire recently....Actually the price above is a good one and there is no problems getting them sent from the U.S. I've been looking for ages and will have to " bite the bullet " so to speak and order one...Have bought off Grey's site above in the past so that's where I"ll be getting mine. Regards, Paul.. Quote
Windy Posted April 5, 2017 Author Report Posted April 5, 2017 Cheers guys. Well at least, if I recall correctly, there's no import duty on books? So it's just the US postage to consider. I wonder why you can't get a new copy in the uk? Quote
Stephen Posted April 5, 2017 Report Posted April 5, 2017 Maybe customs doesn't like pictures of swords as well Quote
Okiiimo Posted April 5, 2017 Report Posted April 5, 2017 Is this book still in print? It's only available on amazon through third party dealers and some of the prices are pretty amazing. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 6, 2017 Report Posted April 6, 2017 I have copies of the book and have always been able to get more from Jim Dawson. $120 plus post on my site. Grey 1 Quote

Windy Posted April 18, 2017 Author Report Posted April 18, 2017 The book arrived this morning, all the way from Minnesota. Really well packaged, so happy to report that, despite the miles, no damage at all. Broken in properly, as per Greys advice on his site. What a cracking book, really pleased and well worth the money. Cheers Grey! Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 18, 2017 Report Posted April 18, 2017 Thanks again Matt; glad you're pleased with the book. If any of you don't know about breaking in (not breaking) a new book, here is the articles page on my site with instructions near the bottom. http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/articles Cheers, Grey Quote
Ron STL Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 Grey, I've never read your guidelines before and your advice with books (and I liked your thoughts on remounting gunto mounted swords, regarding effect on value). All such good advice on handling books. I believe it was Arnold Frenzel who decades ago suggested to not "thumb through" a book or even page through, in the usual placement of one's fingers. After years of this the fingers will often "dirty" pages in that spot. Those "thick" taikan can so easily be damaged (the spine) if not opened correctly. Hope everyone takes not of your advice! John A Stuart Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 So true Ron. When you pay over 1000$ in some cases for them, fully opened and laid flat will bust the spine. Care needed for those old and brittle tomes. John Quote
