Hi all

 

Having a practice and have come up with the following.

Showa 19 = 1944

 

Nen = year

 

San + Gatsu = March

 

?

 

Unfortunately I can’t make head nor tales of the 1st, 2nd, or 8th kanji.

 

 

Any help or a prod in the right direction would be much appreciated

you have the first two Showa, i would like to know the first name of this Shigetsugu...yes seen it on ebay.

theres no pulling the wool over your eyes but in my defense every so often I just look at what is there and have a go at translating it, it is one way to learn.

As for the first two kanji I could not find any thing close to Sho-Wa not written that way?

What about the last one though

(The last Kanji can be read as Jitsu, depending on context, but with same meaning)

 

(Star) Sho-wa Teen-Nine Third Month Day

 

= 1st day of March, Showa 19

Just to clarify "Ju, Ku, and Hi/Jitsu" are the one's that I could'nt get. The star by itself means Showa? or is it the combination of "star, Ju, Ku? that would be read as Showa?

You got it all in your first post....

 

Visit Richard Steins site to read about what the Star stamp (it is a stamp by the way) and other stamps meaning.

 

The fist two kanji (below the star) are SHO WA.... characters are a little stylized so it may not look quite like what you expect when compared to typed kanji.

 

then JU and KU and NEN - 19th year

 

then SAN and GATSU - 3rd Month

 

then HI - Day (basically can be read by us as "a day in")

 

昭 - SHO

和 - WA

å - JU - 10

ä¹ - KU - 9

å¹´ - NEN - YEAR

三 - SAN - 3

月 - GATSU - MONTH

æ—¥ - HI - DAY

this is the other side, whats interesting is this Shigetsugu, looks to have been carved by the same smith that did Shigefusa, a story that may call for looking into.

in Doc Stiens site under RIKUGUN JUMEI TOSHO SWORDSMITHS they list a Wakabayashi Shigetsugu which is the way Shigefusa signed his first name see (Sloughs pg. 157). I wonder if its the same smith and he used dif, name at dif forges.

There is an oshigata of this blade on my gallery page. It was NOT my sword at any time, someone asked me to take an oshigata for them. Just out of curiosity could someone provide me with a link to the sale please.

Correction, but an interesting one. It is not the same sword, but one with a serial number with a difference of 13, and a painted number with a difference of 10.

did you look at the saku on the Shigefusa very close to the Shigetsugu, and dont think ive seen any others sign with that stroke count

I think it is definitely Saku, his Aizu and Ju are also quite funky :lol:
