Kanamuchi (Kanemuchi) Iron Whip

Gents,

 

I have just bought a rather interesting item - a kanamuchi (iron whip) shaped like a bamboo. I am looking for some information about it, as I found just scattered factoids on the net and these are not enough.

Seen with the eyes of a smith, this is a wonderful work of art! Is it somewhat resilient like a spring? How old do you think it might be?

A bit like a spring, but I believe it is made of rather soft iron.

I have a very similar one. I too went looking for information. I did manage to but two sets of Menuki with a muchi motif. I collected images on Pinterest. Search for muchi.
