md02geist Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 I'm looking for a good source on researching materials used in tsukamaki; silk, leather, etc, and which time periods and areas we see them in, which was most / least popular etc etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Google searches have primarily drummed up modern iaito and such discussion. I do have the two PDF files of tsukamaki pictures from this site already, linked in a previous forum post. Quote
b.hennick Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 David McDonald is an excellent tsukamakishi (handle wrapper). He is a member of this forum. David has won a prize for his work at a competition in Japan. You might send him a PM. 2 Quote
md02geist Posted January 2, 2017 Author Report Posted January 2, 2017 Thank you! I got interested when I found out at some point paper was actually used? How interesting. Quote
b.hennick Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 Paper is used to form wedges that help to shape the wrap. I have seen fabric (cotton) that was lacquered to look like leather, leather, silk, cotton, polyester, baleen, string, shoelaces, etc. I have seen no wrap with handles of wood, same covered wood, metal, ivory, bone etc. Quote
Stephen Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 ther is paper, hans is doing a wrap for me, reported longer lasting than leather, first photo is old and new pre coating its folded over its self then lacquered. the finished look were going for 2 Quote
Dave R Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 I have seen photo's of lacquered paper Ito on original Tsuka, and this site actually describes it among other types of wrap. Well worth a visit. http://www.tsukamaki.net/ Quote
md02geist Posted January 3, 2017 Author Report Posted January 3, 2017 Yup I meant paper actually used for the wrap itself. What I am interested in is what materials were most popularly used in what eras and for what purpose. Example; when/why use leather instead of silk? Quote
Greg F Posted January 3, 2017 Report Posted January 3, 2017 Stephen that looks brilliant, would love to see the finished product. Greg Quote
