Blagoy Posted December 28, 2016 Report Posted December 28, 2016 Hello everyone, I'm very excited about Nagamaki - naoshi sword, but don't find much information about them and I'll be glad if you guys share some knowledge with me. And if some of you have Nagamaki - naoshi blade end share some pictures, that will be great. I saw few blades in AOI-art, but it's far more expensive from my budget. Maybe someday i will have one of these beautiful piece Best regards, Blagoy Kirilov (Sofia, Bulgaria) Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted December 28, 2016 Report Posted December 28, 2016 Hello, In regards to images try doing an internet search using "naginata naoshi," you will likely come up with many more results. Also, search NMB for previous discussions. Quote
b.hennick Posted December 28, 2016 Report Posted December 28, 2016 Good advice on Nagamaki on "naginata naoshi". Quote
seattle1 Posted December 28, 2016 Report Posted December 28, 2016 Hello: Franco's suggestion is helpful, however I think you will find that the literature on nagamaki and naginata is sometimes seemingly contradictory. Don't take any one writing to be holy writ. I have frequently tried to puzzle out why a kantei designation said one or the other. It seems that the rule of thumb is a "naginata-hi" defines it as a naginata and not a nagamaki, though all naginata do not have hi. Similarly and more subtle is the distinction between a nagamaki and a katana, particularly when the former is shortened. An interesting piece popped up on Aoi today, AS16676, a blade by Naokatsu called a katana. If you look at the jiri it seem obvious that it was once cut off and did not start like as kiri-jiri, but as a nagamaki or naga-katana. Happy New Year. Arnold F. Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted December 28, 2016 Report Posted December 28, 2016 Hello Arnold, All, It is my understanding that for the NBTHK all nagamaki fall under the classification of naginata, and since the designation of nagamaki comes from how it was mounted, unless and without knowing the specific history of a particular sword the designation of naginata is given.
