A while ago, while buying a knife collection from someone, he hauled out 2 barely Japanese-style swords for me to look at. He wasn't under any allusions they were genuine, but wanted to ask my opinion.
My first thought was that they were Pakistani swords, barely representing Japanese swords. But a feint memory of a conversation I had with a South African collector a long time ago keeps popping into my head.
Seems way back in the 70's or early 80's, one of the car companies in SA commissioned some Japanese type swords to be cheaply made for an advertising campaign. Can't remember if it was Suzuki or one of the others, but I was wondering if these were perhaps related.
So..to cut a long story short, are these just bad Pakistani swords, or bad advertising swords? Seems to be a mix of katakana and kanji..unless it is gibberish?
Anyone want to have a go? Much appreciated.
