Now how did they know the maker of this tsuba met his maker ????

Why don't you ask the NTHK directly about their "kinsei" attribution? And while you're at it, tell them to fire the guy who writes Japanese like a first-grader ....

Could some kind member please explain this correspondence or, alternatively, supply a link to the earlier question? And what is the meaning of 'kinsei'?

Many thanks, baffled (John L).

Hi John,

According to this page: http://www.samurai-archives.com/vocab.html kinsei is a Scholarly term describing the "Early Modern' period in Japanese history; the time between the Momoyama and Meiji Periods.

The original question stems from a previous discussion (I'll have to look up where it was) that stated that modern kodogu will not get origami unless the artist has passed away. Ie...living artists can not be papered at shinsa. How modern is "modern" though?

Brian

PS - Is the origami written in very poor grammar, and does this bring the paper into question at all?

Personally I feel the term can only mean " contemporary ", as Showa period to present. I could very well be wrong ( as usual ).

If it means Momoyama to Meiji............... what's the point ? a pretty wide spread, you think ? No artist /school attribution, basically the paper tells you nothing you don't already know !! It's like one time a collector presented a tsuba to C. Condell for opinion and Condell looked up and said " it's a tsuba "

It indeed seems to cover Momoyama until Bakumatsu according to the Wikipedia (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%BF%91%E4%B8%96). Which means it's a notch or two above the attribution "AD".
