LtKen1 Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Dear Folksjust after some general feedback please on this massed produced (I assume) WW2 katana. The sword has been stored poorly in a cupboard without any intevention or preservative measures. It has the original owners name tag on it, or so I was told some 35 years ago. Any Ideas on tracking down him or his decendants would also be apreciated. Thanks in anticipation. Ken 1 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 The signature looks like Bishu (or Bizen, can't tell for sure which it is) Ju Kanemitsu. This is a Bizen nakago but the patina doesn't look old enough to match any of the Bizen Kanemitsu listed in Hawley's. But maybe I have the signature wrong. Grey Quote
Mark Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 maybe maker is Kanemoto? not sure about the place. That type of mounting usually has Showa gendai blades Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Ken,I am with the BIZEN KANEMITSU party. To read the tag, place it flat and make the best photos possible. Maybe our Japanese members want to give it a try Quote
Stephen Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 maybe KANEMOTO (兼元), Ansei (安政, 1854-1860), Ōshū – “Ōshū-jū Kanemoto” (奥州住兼元), “Aizu-jū Kanemoto” (会津住兼元), “Ōshū Aizu-jū Kanemoto” (奥州会津住兼元), student of the 10th or 11th gen. Aizu Kanesada (兼定) Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 My mistake: Kanemoto it is. Can't be Bizen; must be some other place. But that does look like a Bizen nakago. Show us a picture that clearly shows the top 2 characters (those closest to the business end of the sword. Grey Quote
Stephen Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 DID you not read my last post grey? Could it be Oshu-ju Kanemoto? Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Very nice. I have never seen an old blade mounted in this type of mounts. Quote

Ohmura San shows one on his site near the bottom of the page. Uncommon though. End of the War all sorts came out of the woodwork. http://ohmura-study.net/753.html Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 I don't think Oshu, Stephen. Maybe it isn't a province; could be a city. Still need a better picture. Grey Quote
