obiwanknabbe Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 Hard to read upside down but it looks dremel cut. I smell chinese copy. Others please chime in. Kurt K Quote
Gilles Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 It does't look like Japanese kanji to my humble opinion. Quote
truelotus Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 dear all thank you for your inputthis was belonged to an old gunto in indonesia, whilst I am aware that there are lots of chinese made gunto out there, the koshirae of this one seems genuine. The owner said he sanded the nakago parts to see the kanji without knowing itI still believed the sword is genuine, though the nakago is somewhat dubioushere's another in correct position Quote
truelotus Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 here's the rest of the swordwe can see clearly the koshirae is of true type 98 shin gunto, missing only ishizuki (scabbard tip) Quote
truelotus Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 Strange kanji chisel strokes... agree, Jean ... the whole package seemed allright, as there are no Indonesians capable of making gunto koshirae, so basically the chance that this was fake is somewhat low but I cannot say about the mei, looked weird to me, also Quote
truelotus Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 this just crossed my mindis it possible that the sword was actually MUMEI, then someone with too much time, wanted it to be more expensive and carved something on the nakago ??Donny 1 Quote
Stephen Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 bingo Donny, and a crappy job he did 1 Quote
truelotus Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 bingo Donny, and a crappy job he did F*** !! I really hated when someone did that to a nihonto ... truly destroyed the sword !!!! no wonder it looked very odd Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 Donny,to me, the blade does not look genuine. There are not enough good photos of the blade itself to support my feeling, and the corrosion is quite bad, but I see a NAKAGO with a wrong shape - SHINOGI not clear and in an unusual position - and wrong YASURI ME. There are genuine GUNTO with a kind of erratic filework, but mostly not that bad. The MEI is not in a good position in relation to the MEKUGI-ANA.It would help to see clear photos of the naked NAKAGO with everything stripped, especially the HABAKI. If HA MACHI and MUNE MACHI are on a level, it might nonetheless be a Japanese war-time blade.KOSHIRAE-wise, everything seems genuine indeed. Quote
obiwanknabbe Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 Agreed jean. The file work looks completely wrong. The habaki is most certainly not made for this blade. If anything, its a VERY late war sword with genuine fittings assembled around it. Kurt k Quote
Shugyosha Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 Hi Donny, It's your money and they are your eyes and I don't mean to speak out of turn here but, just keep your hand in your pocket for a while. You seem to be buying a number of items that are, at best, of doubtful quality and you don't need to do this. You can learn just by looking at items for sale on the internet and studying and researching them. There's lots of good advice on here and usually good items at decent prices if you look at the sales section. Also, if you are contemplating a purchase, there's no shame in asking advice first. Kind regards, John 1 Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Original koshirae with a fake blade. 1 Quote
truelotus Posted November 18, 2016 Author Report Posted November 18, 2016 thank you for all of your inputI already received the sword, and it's a mumei shinto blade in gunto koshirae - true nihonto in quite good conditiontoo bad someone (incredibly stupid one) carved kindergarten-kanji-version of mei on the nakago Quote
Jamie Posted November 18, 2016 Report Posted November 18, 2016 I'm with John. I'm not sure how one would call this "quite good" condition. And if it is Shinto, I'm not sure how you are so confident in even saying that. Well you'll see when you attempt to recoup your money. Quote

Well you'll see when you attempt to recoup your money. don't mean to do that, either - I got it pretty cheap I mean it's good base to be repolished and used as training sword :D Quote
