peterd Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hi Guys, any help would be appreciated. Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Fukuto 福人 Good fortune for a person, I think, if not a name. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Hi John, 福 人 ? Not sure about the bottom kanji, looks like 八 ?? Fuku Hachi?? 8 Fortunes or blessings? There's quite a few food related businesses using Fuku Hachi in their name titles according to Google, so I guess it's a very popular symbol of Luck multiplied? 8 being the lucky number?: http://www.fukuhachi.com/ https://tabelog.com/en/tokyo/A1311/A131102/13092931/ On the other side, I think I can see 三 十 九 San Ju Kyu "39" something? on the left column 吉 "Kichi" - Auspicious/Lucky on the top of the right hand column? 之 Is that Kore? implying "This" as the standalone Kanji in the middle?? SteveM Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 From right to left it looks like 享和元二十囗 Kyōwa gan nijū. (1801, 29?) I haven't determined if the number at the left is 29 or 39. It sort of looks like 29 with a scratch that coincidentally happens to be at the right location to turn the 2 into a 3. The one under that which looks like 善 (sort of a 羊 or 生 on top of 田) is puzzling me also. 2 Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 Hi Steve., I see what you mean about whether it is Ni or San. Looking at it again, the top line is way thinner and scratch like as you say, so I'll say Ni also. Could the final Kanji on the left hand column be two, the final simply expressing a day 日? I'm not suggesting an Imperial link, but in recent times Imperial gift swords were inscribed "Onshi" on the Habaki (See Ohmura san's site): http://ohmura-study.net/931.html Does anyone else on NMB have inscribed Habaki which imply a Pre-Modern era?. John A Stuart Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 The number 8, yes, better after a Snickers bar. Haaaaa! John 1 Quote

Baka Gaijin Posted November 11, 2016 Report Posted November 11, 2016 Hi Peter., What is the rest of the koshirae like? More to the point what is the quality of the blade? My reasoning being as it has a number, and possibly a name, might it have been entered in the manifest of an Armoury in 1801? Quote
peterd Posted November 12, 2016 Author Report Posted November 12, 2016 Hi, mounts are good average.F/k are silver omori stile waves, menuki are shellfish, tsuba Iron with silver mimi. The blade is suriage 28:5 inches I think shinto maybe Ishido school. Unfortunately needs a polish Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Hi Peter. When taking pictures of a Nakago the habaki should be removed. It might cover interesting information about the blade .. Fresh tsukamaki ? Quote
peterd Posted November 13, 2016 Author Report Posted November 13, 2016 Hi Carlo. picture of tsukamaki makes it look fresher than it is plus i gently cleaned with a tooth brush before photos. Sorry for leaving on habaki Quote
