Oliver J Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hello everyone. I have this Tsuba and I would translate the signature. Someone could help me? Thank you in advance, it is always valuable assistance on this website. Best regards, Oliver Sorry for my little Us language. Quote
Brian Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Unfortunately, the soft lines and lack of detail, and marks on the seppa-dai make me think this is a cast tsuba. Quote
Oliver J Posted November 6, 2016 Author Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hello Brian, I bought in 2010 from a serious collector. And the signature can we translate? Thank you, Oliver Quote
DirkO Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 You might have bought it from a serious collector, however everything points to the same conclusion Brian reached. Sorry for not having any better news for you. Quote
Oliver J Posted November 6, 2016 Author Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hi The serious collector is not always honest I know perfectly. This is not good news but it is true despite my disappointment, is it possible to translate the kanji? Thank you Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Oliver, looks like GOSHU no JU, smith's name not identifiable for me. This may have to do with the TSUBA possibly being cast. Details often get lost in the process. Quote
Oliver J Posted November 6, 2016 Author Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hello Jean Jean is French? Thank you very much for your statement but then that means it has no value? Bad news Best regards, Olivier Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 I'd guess 江州住 Gōshū-jū and on the other side possibly, 宗 mune (which could also be start for Sōten). 1 Quote
christianmalterre Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Yes Olivier- no value! unfortunately... this is a fake Tsuba! Christian Quote
Oliver J Posted November 6, 2016 Author Report Posted November 6, 2016 Thank you for this valuable information. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Oliver, have a look at good TSUBA - in hand, in books, and in the internet - and compare. Try to get a sense of what quality, good design, and good workmanship can mean. Many of us collectors have made mistakes in the beginning, but that is the way of learning - trial and error. The more you see, the more you will be able to differentiate.Good luck, and don't be disappointed!(Jean is indeed French) Quote
MauroP Posted November 6, 2016 Report Posted November 6, 2016 Hi Oliver, I have the very same tsuba, possibly in a better shape, and I have to confirm it's a cast one. The signature is Gōshū (no) jū Sōten - 江州住 宗典 (which is obviously gimei). The interesting questions now are: why and when these kind of tsuba were produced? The answers are not obvious. Bye, Mauro 1 Quote
Oliver J Posted November 7, 2016 Author Report Posted November 7, 2016 Gentlemen, thank you very much. I always excellent answers on this forum. I'll be careful and observe, to learn, to deceive me and get me. I agree Mauro, it would be interesting to know the production and the age of the tsuba. Regards, Oliver Quote
